		In 1879 the Minnesota and Black Hills branch of the Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad was constructed from Heron Lake in Jackson County to Woodstock.
		The town of Pipestone was largely built with rock quarried from the large deposits of Sioux quartzite in the county.
		It was later determined that the rock had a unique chemical composition, and because it was believed to occur only where Catlin had found it, the red pipestone was named "catlinite" in his honor.

		In 1860 and '61, he was part owner of a train drawing Hudson Bay goods from St. Cloud to such a point on the Red River of the North, as could be reached by steamboats.
		In 1861, his father, David Harvey, enlisted in the Seventh Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and his mother returned with the family to New York State, where they were joined by the father, after the war.
