This photo of Jim Thorpe, which moved with a United Press International story in 1975, was identified as being taken in 1925, when he played with the Rock Island Independents.
It came from United Press International to go with a 1975 story about the effort to get the International Olympics Committee to restore the medals Thorpe won in 1912, but which were later taken away when it was discovered he had played professional minor league baseball prior to the 1912 Games.
If there was an "Apper Bros." company in Rock Island in 1925, the photo would almost certainly be of Thorpe in an Independents uniform, but we've been unable to determine if such a company existed.
