 David Essex: Nostalgia
David Essex got a new record contract in 1973 as a result of his acting popularity and soon had a U.K. hit with “Rock On.” This song had Essex slickly delivering a nostalgia-oriented lyric that dropped 50’s references like James Dean ("Jimmy Dean...James Dean, Rock on!") and Blue Suede Shoes over a calypso beat.
David Essex is mostly remembered on American shores for his one chart hit, the moody “Rock On.” However, this fact only scratches the surface of an amazing career.
David Essex continued to record and tour throughout the 70’s, consistently hitting the charts in England.

 The David Essex Band
David played drums on one song for us at Dartford when we were backing Herbie.
The other 2 are imports - in my own personal opinion the 2nd one is the better of the 2 (but then I am a die hard Essex fan and love most of the tracks - it is a double album and consequently the most expensive).
With regard to Rock On- I have listed below the 3 available albums containing the track - Rock On (the album) is a US release - I found it on Amazon.com (although they are only showing 1 available so if you want to get it there I would move quite fast).

 CD GALLERY: Smashing Pumpkins
The other rare tracks are a mixed bag..."Rock On", a cover of that old David Essex song, fails to thrill me, despite quoting a few Van Halen songs in the mix.
Totally comprised of slow, boring songs mixed with a few upbeat, hip-hop tracks (if you've heard "Ava Adore" and "Perfect", which I'm sure you have by now, you've heard the two heaviest tracks on the album.) I guess this CD isn't *that* bad, but it certainly breaks no new ground.
In addition, "We Only Come Out at Night" sounds like some joke song the Munchkins would be fond of singing...but the good news is, cut out those four songs and the album fits perfectly onto a 100-minute tape, which makes for some excellent road music.

 David Fisher: Bio
Our rock'n roll reception included two excellent sets from Peter Bruntnell and his band, a performance of David Essex's Hold Me Close by Lop-Lop featuring Jason King look-a-like drummer Martin Gregory's debut as vocalist, and a short performance from the great John Cooper Clarke.
After getting lots of positive responses to a song I had recorded called "Valentine" (produced by Tim Bradshaw, at the time guitarist with Fat Lady Sings and now with David Gray), I decided to get a bank loan and put out a promo CD EP on my own label.
I used to crash the celebrity jams held on the "Dreamhouse Club" acoustic nights at the Waterrats on the Gray's Inn Road - I got to rub shoulders and sometimes play my little percussion eggs with the likes of Marcella Detroit, Amy Mann, Shriekback, various Waterboys, Robyn Hitchcock, and David Gray.

The Edge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Howell Evans (born August 8, 1961, Barking, Essex (now in Greater London, England), nickname the Edge, is the lead guitarist of the Irish rock band U2.
Evans also supplies the backing vocals for U2's singer Bono, and whilst he may not have as great a voice as some, Evans's backing vocals (often taking the form of a repeated cry) add much to songs like "Beautiful Day".
The album was recorded at the height of the 80's "shred-metal" era, but Evans's guitar playing on it could not be further from the emphasis of the time on technique and speed (often at the expense of the song having any kind of emotional depth or meaning).

 Soriano's Daily Review
Recorded for the rock ‘n roll movie, “That’ll Be the Day” (which Essex also starred in with Keith Moon and Ringo Starr) the song Rock On became a hit in both the UK and the US.
If there were two words to describe David Essex’s career, they would be “shit sandwich.” Not shit sandwich in the ordinary sense, where two slices of bread envelop shit.
Recorded in 1972, not exactly a nostalgic time for rock n’roll nor a optimistic time in history, Rock On is one of those cynical takes on America, a rock n’ roll version of films like Midnight Cowboy or Cool Hand Luke.

Amazon.com: War of the Worlds [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]: Music
The songs and instrumentals are interwoven with a narration by Richard Burton, and the singers include the Moodies' Justin Hayward (his two songs charted as singles in the U.K., with "Forever Autumn" hitting #5), Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott, and David Essex.
Wayne throws in the character of the narrator's fiancee for no reason whatsoever -- except that he had co-written a fantastic lost-love song called "Forever Autumn" and it was so good that he needed to find a way to work it into the album.
Jeff Wayne's 1978 musical version of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" isn't a classic, but it contains some really good music and should appeal to fans of progressive rock and the Moody Blues.

Barnes & Noble.com - 99 Red Balloons: And 100 Other All Time Great One-Hit Wonders - Brent Mann - Paperback
I was always intrigued by three classic one-hit wonder songs: 'Into the Night' by Benny Mardones, 'Dancing in the Moonlight' by King Harvest, and 'Rock On' by David Essex, all of which are profiled in Brent Mann's new book.
Every song listed in the book has charted in the Top 40 on Billboard's national pop chart.
The best thing about this book is that it features such a cool mix of one-hitters from the late 50s though the late 90s.
