Although "Rock Star" is rumored to have begun life as the true story of how Judas Priest replaced a band member, as written by John Stockwell (TV's "Cheaters" and "Breast Men") it's devolved into a series of cliches.
Basically, the statement made is that the stars that make the music for their young auds must live the hedonistic lifestyle of sex and drugs (and rock 'n' roll).
Mark Wahlberg is personable as the rock star wannabe and maintains his innocence through his rise from unknown club singer to teen idol.

After seeing "Rock Star," again I remembered those silly dreams of being in a band – if only mom had me take guitar lessons instead of violin and baritone horn (not too many bands were in the market for a decent baritone horn in those days).
Chris is kinda bummed, but it gets explained to him that he now has the life all of his fans dream of, the life of a rock star, and he should live the life – if not for him then at least for his fans.
"Rock Star" isn’t the best of rock movies, hell, it shows you kind of the things you would expect, but it does have its moments, both kind of funny and kind of poignant.

Forget the "follow your dreams and they will come true" junk the movie pushes at you, we all know that's an odds game few win, but we can enjoy watching it happen to others if for no other reason but to see what's not so good about the lifestyle we were unable to obtain.
However, this is a formula movie that works, so being able to figure out plot lines isn't as bad as it sounds.

That honest hopefulness works well for him in Rock Star, a generally entertaining tale of an 80s heavy metal superfan who suddenly becomes his favorite band's lead singer.
From that point on, Rock Star unfortunately takes itself a little too seriously, taking time to document stuff we've already read about (it is a full 15 years later, after all, and hair bands like Motley Crue have been telling these stories for a while).
Rock Star would've been better off as a bigger satire of the time, ripping into the music, the people, and the period, and allowing Wahlberg's wide-eyed, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to anchor the movie's emotional honesty and sympathy.

How can Marky, such a stud in "Boogie Nights," be such a dud in "Rock Star?" It would seem the once and future leader of the Funky Bunch is better suited to the porn than corn.
