Rock Swings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rock Swings is an album by Paul Anka.
Recorded in November 2004 and released on May 31, 2005 in Canada and June 7, 2005 in the United States, it contains swing jazz covers of popular rock songs from the 1980s and 1990s.
Reportedly, the Michael Jackson song "Billie Jean" was slated to be on the album in the recording stages, but Paul Anka could not get through a vocal take without bursting into laughter.

What Anka tries to do is totally devoid of the actual context to which these songs were originally written, which in the case of a number of these fourteen songs erases any meaning the original composer and performers intended with their initial composition and performances.
Traditional pop standards, when reinterpreted into other styles such as swing or jazz vocal, are usually quite keen on maintaining the essence of the original as the basis to reinterpret from, keeping alive the original 'soul', as it where, only re-evaluated and taken in slightly different directions.
On the other hand, there are reasons why extrapolation attempts using contemporary rock and pop music just as equally don't work; they simply aren't structured and performed to carry the same type of emotion, energy and feeling of the genotype into such wildly divergent reinterpretations in other musical styles.

Casa del ionesco: Paul Anka ~ Rock Swings
On the downside: not much of the rest of the album rocks and a few tracks barely even swing: it's hard to imagine anything so quintessentially superfluous as an even blander retread of Lionel Ritchie's execrable Hello; surely one of the most annoyingly anodyne songs in the canon of popular music.
There are so many runners and riders jostling for position at the starting gate of the Rock Swings Weak Ballad Derby that the bona fide thoroughbreds (and there are a few) almost get trampled in the crush.
Rock Swings is a deceitful doppelganger: neither divine nor diabolical, it's an almost great album which is almost awful.

What he achieves in "Rock Swings" came from digging, digging and evaluating these contemporary songs on their own terms, rather against pop classics from previous eras.

I am a rock fan not a swing fan, yet the arrangements and the band playing really rocks - or swings, whichever way you hear it, and Anka's voice is great.
Paul Anka clearly was and this is pretty authentic sounding swing (some are more bossa nova actually) and for the most part it works brilliantly.

First of all, there's the material -- a compelling selection of standards that reveals a close inspection and an inspired reimagining of the pop and alternative artists of the period (perhaps not by Anka himself).

Paul Anka - Rock Swings CD Review
Most of the songs survive the journey to Vegas through swinging big band caravans pretty well, some beautifully: “Black Hole Sun” is just killer, its lanquid, gorgeous opening minute and a half bouncing into a guitar-strummed, horn-driven piece with a dynamite finish.
One of my big complaints about last year’s great (in places) Ray Charles “Duets” album was the string arrangements, and those on even some of The Genius’ own best-known classics set off my cringe meter.
“Rock Swings” is one of the best arranged and produced albums in existence, with probably the only spot-on drop dead perfect use of a big band in a pop context that I’ve ever heard.

An appealing novelty from a former teen idol your parents may be too young to remember, Paul Anka's Rock Swings is destined to be the one big-band album in many college kids' record collections.

Rock Swings could have been done by any number of middle-aged crooners, but it's brimming with good humor and silly fun -- and it's far less annoying than a Cherry Poppin' Daddies record.
