Rock and Roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be seen in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
Early rock and roll combined elements of blues, boogie woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues, and is also influenced by traditional folk music, gospel music, fl and white, and country and western.
While mainstream rock music was no longer able to shock or offend, new forms of music, particularly Punk rock and Rap emerged to fill this role; people who as youths delighted in the effect rock and roll had on their parents found themselves railing in a similar fashion against their children's music.

Rock Around The Clock - The Anthem Of Rock And Roll
Although not the first rock and roll record (according to many musical historians, that honor belongs to Haley's cover version of the 1951 rhythm and blues hit, "Rocket 88") it is considered by many to be the song that put rock and roll on the map in America and around the world.
Rock Around the Clock is also the title of a 1956 musical motion picture that featured Bill Haley and His Comets along with Alan Freed, The Platters, and Freddie Bell and the Bellboys.
Rock Around the Clock told a highly fictionalized rendition of how rock and roll was discovered, but moviegoers didn't care about the plotline; they wanted to hear the music.

Rock and roll anthem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The subject that the anthem celebrates can vary, although one common anthemic theme is the celebration of rock and roll for itself.
The essence of the rock and roll anthem may be best captured in the Leiber and Stoller song "That is Rock and Roll", sung first by The Coasters in 1959:

By the late 1980s rock radio was dominated by aging classic rock artists, slick commercial pop-rock and hair metal; MTV had arrived and brought with it a perception that style was more important than substance.
Many of rock and roll's early stars (as well as their jazz and blues counterparts) were known as hard-drinking, hard-living characters; during the 1960s a decadent rock lifestyle became more publically known, aided by the growth of the underground rock press which documented such excesses, often in exploitative fashion.
Pretty soon everybody was smoking it, and it seemed to be all right.” The relationship of rock music to the hippie and counterculture movements, which espoused use of marijuana and other drugs, is complex and intertwined, and it is not always clear in which direction influence flowed.

Oldies - Fifty Years Of Rock And Roll   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Rock has often been declared dead — disco danced to the top of the charts in the ’70s, and rap reigns today — but the genre survives and even thrives, as evidenced by its recent reinvigoration by such garage-rockers as the White Stripes and Strokes.
Just as embracing "Rock Around the Clock" (1955) as the first rock 'n' roll song would be compatible with a certain nostalgia regarding the 1950s, awarding the honor to "That's All Right, Mama" (1954) would tend to enhance the cult of Presley.
Perhaps the impulse to agree on a rock 'n' roll grail is in response to the genre's increasing fragmentation - as well as the lack of consensus between critics and the public regarding the state of the music.

Anthem rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anthem rock is a genre of Rock and roll.
Aside from lacking the negative connotations of "arena rock", this broad definition of anthem rock allows for a description of music bands whose sound resembled that of Queen, Journey, Scorpions, or Styx but whose concert attendance did not demand an arena as a venue.
"Anthem rock" is also used more narrowly as a subgenre of hard rock, typified by obvious tempo changes, vocal crescendoes, and melodramatic lyrical narratives.

But Rock and Roll was still an underground music form, enjoyed primarily by fl audiences and those relatively few whites like Alan Freed who braved the racial intolerance of 1950s America to visit the back of the musical bus, so to speak.
The generally accepted view is that Rock and Roll -- as originally conceived -- is the melding of rhythm and blues and country and western musical styles with the application of a backbeat.
There is even doubt that "Rock Around the Clock" was written as a Rock and Roll song, but possibly as some sort of variation on "Syncopated Clock." Certainly, anyone who plays the original arrangement on the piano can tell that the song simply doesn't have the swinging feel of a rock classic.

The movie is a polished (and irresistible) piece of crowd-pleasing formula and deserves to become a monster hit…Black may not be the most talented or gifted actor around, but he has something too many performers lack nowadays: A manic, outsized personality.
Jack Black: He's the clown king of rock and roll…This is pretty tame stuff for a wild man like Black, not to mention screenwriter Mike White (‘Chuck and Buck,’‘The Good Girl’) and indie director Richard Linklater (‘Dazed and Confused,’ ‘Waking Life’) -- kid-friendly crowd pleasers are hardly their meat.
