I began drawing rock art when we came across panels several years ago simply because I thought the images were beautiful.
Some people who draw rock art for recording purposes hang a string grid or metric ruler over the panel and then draw the panel on graph paper.

 Rock Drawings in Valcamonica - World Heritage Site - Pictures, info and travel reports
It is home to the greatest complex of rock drawings in sub-Alpine Italy, with approximately 250,000 petroglyphs drawn by members of the Camunni tribe on hundreds of exposed rocks dating from about 8000 BC; cosmological, figurative, and cartographic motifs are featured, in some locations forming monumental hunting and ritual `scenes´.
I have been to the sites of Foppe di Nadro, near Ceto, in the Regional Park of the Rock Drawings of Ceto, Cimbergo and Paspardo, and to the National Park of the Rock Drawings of Naquane, founded in 1955 near Capo di Ponte as the most important in Valcamonica, 30 ha large.
The guide has rock art locations numbered from 1 to 103 (but many numbers are missing) — and perhaps 15/20 of these are worth spending time at — some of the numbered sites on the guide map also proved rather difficult to trace on the ground!.

When looking at the rock art record, the extreme disproportion of the size of the stone in relation to the atlatl leads this writer to the conclusion that the primary reason for the attachment of theses stones was as a charmstone, to bring luck to the hunter.
The images of the hunters also reflect the changes in rock art styles from the simple early drawings to the later more detailed images including depictions of complex headdresses in the later part of these atlatl hunters history.
The rock art record supports this, as other instances of atlatl images can be found in later post bow and arrow images.
