  Rock opera
A rock opera is a musical piece in the form of an opera or a musical in a modern rock and roll style rather than more traditional forms.
It differs from conventional rock and roll music, which is often a song that is unlinked in plot or story with other songs, but overlaps considerably with concept album or rock musical.
The distinction may be that the rock opera tells a story and a concept album sets a mood, but some albums tell moody stories and others tell stories about moods.

Not by telling you that it is a two-disc opus of 20 songs that cover 30 years worth of roots rock/alt country/southern rock, exploring the history of the south through the prism of Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the most influential rock bands of all time.
Recorded in Birmingham, Alabama, over the course of a year or two, "Southern Rock Opera" was mostly finished over a year and a half ago, but due to various small delays, it wasn't released until the summer of 2002 (Rolling Stone actually reviewed it several months before then).
I'm not a Skynyrd fan, and southern rock is not something that takes up a lot of space in my CD collection, but I am from the south, and of the south; I would not be who I am if I hadn't grown up in the south.

A rock opera or rock musical is a musical production in the form of an opera or a musical in a modern rock and roll style rather than more traditional forms.
It differs from conventional rock and roll music, which is often a song that is unlinked in plot or story with other songs, but overlaps considerably with concept album, song cycle, or rock musical.
While it is a very tight rock opera in terms of songs and story line, the story is merely a vehicle for the wonderful music that drives the entire album.

Rock Opera is a Smash - Arts & Entertainment
"Opera" is an obvious buzzword to any opera fan, but when "opera" is in the band's title, the fan is left to wonder if the music is even operatic.
Rock and opera have met many times in the late 20th century, especially during the eighties when artists were experimenting, and new technology was introduced.
The same energy, drama, intensity and raw human expression opera reflects can also be found in rock music; thus the band's choice in using rock to interpret opera with a modern edge is a no brainier.

Or the enlarged opera house might have been completed anytime after September, 1894, to before November, 1895, because no city newspapers are available for this period, and checks of newspapers in neighboring cities give no hint of what was happening at the Table Rock opera house.
The Table Rock Herald, advertised as the only Populist paper in the county, was published from 1893 to 1894, and its columns carried several references to the construction of the opera house, although no change in its physical appearance is ever noted.

Southern Rock isn’t pretty, and nowhere is this more evident than in the music of the Athens, Georgia-based Dixie rockers Drive-By Truckers.
Throughout Southern Rock Opera, Drive-By Truckers takes its lyrical writing to the next level, and the three-guitar assault employed in its songs perfectly captures the sound of 1970s Southern arena rock without ever sounding derivative or mocking.
Nevertheless, there are enough great moments contained on Southern Rock Opera that with a little programming of one’s CD player, it’s possible to reveal a masterpiece.

Tommy (rock opera) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The opera was composed by Who guitarist Pete Townshend, with two tracks contributed by Who bassist John Entwistle and one fictitiously attributed to Who drummer Keith Moon, though actually written by Townshend.
Although Tommy is conventionally described as a rock opera, author and Who historian Richard Barnes points out that this definition is not strictly correct, since Tommy does not utilise the classic operatic formulae of staging, scenery, acting and recitative.
In the rock opera episode of the MTV cartoon series Clone High, a good deal of the music sounds very similar to songs from Tommy (such as JFK's "Touch me, hold me, sign my cast for me"), and some themes are present from Pink Floyd's The Wall.

Thomas Kugler Presents "Lilith, the Rock Opera"
Composer Thomas Kugler presents "LILITH - The Rock Opera," a 24-song double-CD set which retells the Creation story with the addition of Lilith, the first woman created to be Adam's wife.
LILITH is Kugler's second rock opera, the followup to "EVENSONG - A Vampire Rock Opera," released in 2000 and staged in 2001 in Hollywood's Jewel Box Theatre Center.
With its witch's brew of hard-hitting rock and classical instruments, the musical style could be called "electric baroque;" LILITH is like a treasure unearthed from a legendary lost period of music, when rock and orchestral music co-existed in harmony.

Nominally the story of the fictional band Betamax Guillotine, mostly the opera is a dedication to legendary southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, and most of the songs are about, or contain references to, them.
Not a rock opera in the sense of Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar, this sprawling double disc is more akin to a song cycle about Southern rock, in particular Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Act 1's highlight and first rock single is the big-riffed rapcore of "Raised in Harlem," chronicling the healing of the daughter of an overzealous Jairus (played by rapper T-Bone); this song would've worked better if Jairus' claims regarding his New York origins weren't belied by his use of the oh-so-southern contraction "y'all."
