Rock the Casbah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rock the Casbah has been said to be a reference to the anti-imperialist movements in colonial nations as well as the banning of music in Persian and Arab nations.
"Rock the Casbah" originated when the band's manager, after hearing them record an inordinately long track for the album, asked them facetiously "does everything have to be as long as this raga?" (referring to the Indian musical style known for its length and, at least to rock audiences, complexity).
It has been reported that "Rock the Casbah" was an unofficial anthem for the American army during the first Gulf War (the line about dropping "bombs between the minarets" being particularly relevant).

"Rock the Casbah" was in fact the very first song played on the international Armed Forces Radio when that war was declared.
While "Rock the Casbah" is not to be mistaken for an explicitly anti-war song, its "liberation" by the Yanks was "just typical and despicable," in the late Clash frontman Joe Strummer's estimation.
In that respect, Taha is particularly suited to tackle "Rock the Casbah." The song's lyrics specifically target fundamentalist Muslim heavies and their vicious repression of music, rock or otherwise (a nasty tradition going back centuries).

* Rock the Kasbah is a compilation dedicated to the memory of the late front man of the Clash Joe Strummer.
Joe Strummer and the Clash were unwittingly a profound influence on these artists who each in their own way are literally rocking the casbah sometimes as exiles and often at risk to their personal safety.
1982's "Rock the Casbah" from the album "Combat Rock" was written by frontman Joe Strummer on hearing about music being banned by religious leaders in Iran (ironically the song became the soundtrack to the bombardment of Baghdad in 1991's Gulf War).
