The Raw Story | MTV's Rock the Vote: Beyond useless
Rock the Vote (RtV), the MTV-themed campaign to channel youthful energy into electoral politics through the power of celebrity and the cachet of cool has proven over its nearly fifteen years of existence to be useless.
A real revolution by RtV would be to make sure that its celebrity spokespeople actually vote, since flag-draped Madonna failed to after her RtV commercials in 1990 and Ben Affleck voted only once the previous decade according to The Smoking Gun, after admonishing others to vote in the 2000 campaign.
RtV claims that in 1992 it registered 350,000 young people and help lead over two million new young voters to the polls and that these young people reversed a 20-year cycle of declining participation with a 20 percent increase in youth turnout compared to the previous Presidential election.

AlterNet: Does 'Rock the Vote' Miss the Boat?
Rock the Vote's aesthetic trades heavily on a punk/hip-hop anti-establishment look, but its message is strictly work-within-the-system: Vote every four years, wear a $14.99 "Give a Shit" T-shirt, watch MTV and buy 7UP and Motorola phones.
Despite all of this, Rock the Vote and other organizations have begun an ambitious campaign called 20 Million Loud, which seeks to use a variety of promotions to increase youth voter turnout for the 2004 race by two million voters, to 20 million.
Rock the Vote has organized 75 street teams to encourage face-to-face contact, and other groups in the 20 Million Loud Coalition, including the New Voters Project (an offshoot of the successful grassroots organizer Public Interest Research Group), are relying almost exclusively on street teams and door-to-door efforts to help meet their targets.

 The Smoking Gun: Archive
MARCH 26--Rock the Vote, which recruits celebrities to try and convince young people to register to vote and get involved in the political process, announced yesterday that singer Lenny Kravitz has recorded an anti-war song that's now available exclusively on the group's web site.
Since the rock star has also lived in Miami Beach (where he bought a $8.95 million home in October 2001) and Los Angeles, TSG checked with election boards in Dade County and L.A., but neither agency had a record of Kravitz ever being registered in its respective locale.
Kravitz's new song, "We Want Peace," is "an urgent call...for America to be a peaceful leader in the world," according to Rock the Vote, which refers to the musician as a "true patriot." Kravitz wrote and performed the song with Kazem Al Sahir, one of Iraq's leading pop music artists.
