Judas Priest : Rocka Rolla - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
A sketchy and underfocused debut, Rocka Rolla nonetheless begins to delineate the musical territory Judas Priest would explore over the remainder of the decade: frighteningly dark in its effect, tight in its grooves, and capable of expanding to epic song lengths.
On the other hand, Rocka Rolla is also murkier, less precise and powerful in its riff attack, and more blues-based; the stylistic debts to Black Sabbath and Deep Purple are obvious at this juncture, although they would become much less apparent on subsequent releases.
Mostly a curiosity for hardcore fans, Rocka Rolla definitely hints at Judas Priest's potential and originality, but doesn't always suggest the quantum leap in vision that would occur with their very next record.

 Rocka Rolla - Judas Priest - Review - Proto-Priest!
Although it was regarded as so at the time, by modern standards Rocka Rolla is not particularly hard rock and for much of its length is very moods-based, rather atmospheric, and downright experimental in places.
Whatever, the fact remains that Rocka Rolla is a hard rock album with soft elements in so many places that it could just as aptly be described as a soft, mellow rock album with a few assorted hard bits thrown in.
As it is, Rocka Rolla is merely a footnote in the history of one of heavy metal’s greatest bands, but by no means actually a bad footnote that deserves to be ignored at all costs.

 Daily Vault - July 10, 2001
Musically, the songs on Rocka Rolla are a cross between Deep Purple's semi-progressive style and Lonesome Crow-era Scorpions.
The use of some more challenging time signatures is also interesting to listen to, especially on "Rocka Rolla".
But Rocka Rolla does indeed have a fatal flaw - and it is linked to the band's musical discovery.

Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla Review - sputnikmusic
Judas Priest's first album, Rocka Rolla, is a kind of "forgotten" album.
Mainly because of two things; the fact that "Gull Records" owns the rights, and is not very friendly with Priest about it, and that it got a lot of negative reviews in the 80's and 90's when Priest got really popular.
It's followed by the title track, Rocka Rolla, which is much better than the one before.

"Rocka Rolla" is one of their most interesting tunes, kind of a dance-blues hybrid if you can imagine that!!!
Although they came out a little later than sabbath, zeppelin, and maiden, JP has become a HUGE influence on the direction metal took and I wouldn't hesitate to say they are in the top 5 hard rock/metal bands of all time.
No metal collection should be considered complete without Rocka Rolla.

ROCKA ROLLA remains one of the quintet's most diverse efforts, particularly the "Winter Suite," which traverses the dirge-like atmosphere of "Winter," the eerie feedback exercise of "Deep Freeze," the tranquil respite of "Winter Retreat," and the snarling blues-rock of "Cheater."
Also featured is the epic, melancholy ballad "Run of the Mill," which features an atypically quiet solo that builds in intensity to reach the song's despondent, dramatic climax.
Priest may no longer play these songs live, but there are some memorable moments to be found on ROCKA ROLLA.
