Rockabilly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rockabilly is one of the earliest forms of rock and roll as a distinct style of music.
Although the influence of rockabilly, both as a musical style and as a set of attitudes and gestures, has never waned, Holly's death in a plane crash in 1959 tended to mark the end of the classic rockabilly era.
More recent rockabilly performers have merged the style with western swing and jump blues to produce a music that combines elements of music common to the late 1940s and 1950s, without adhering to the strict practices of rockabilly itself.

Rockabilly was born in the heart of the segregated confederecy of the USA's south and while some white musicians did have direct contact with fl musicians, for others their only interaction was by listening to "fl" radio and recordings.
Something has been lost since the early birth and adolescence of Rockabilly and it is not surprising that Rock enthusiasts prefer the classics to the "stuff" that has been marketed during the various Rockabilly revivals throughout the last half of the twentieth century.
As musicologist Roy Brewer puts it, "Given the extensive use of the Latin rhythms in 1950s Rockabilly and rhythm and blues, it is ironic that one of the elements lost in the Rockabilly revival of the 1980s was the use of the Habanera.

Carl Perkins, with his rich baritone, may well be considered the father of Rockabilly music, and during his life, he stayed true to the sound that he started recording in 1955.
The rockabilly revival of the early 1980s, led by the Stray Cats, The Rockats, and others, jet-started Carl’s career as once again he was in demand all over the world.
Although The King was gone by that time, other early rockers like Carl, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis (all; at one time or another, part of the Sun Records stable of stars) enjoyed a renaissance through baby-boomers who were too young, or not even alive, the first time around.

During the early 1950s, white, rural Southerners began fusing acoustic blues and country songs with the electrified jump-blues craze to create rockabilly, an inspiration to contemporary rock 'n' roll.
By the late '50s, though, rockabilly had been effectively commodified by the recording industry, and glossy studio production tamed the music's country edge.
Decades later, however, the classic rockabilly sound found new audiences thanks to such artists as the Blasters, Big Sandy, the Cramps, and the Stray Cats.
