The Rockaway Peninsula, also known as The Rockaways, is the name of a peninsula of Long Island, most of which is located within the borough of Queens in New York City; the peninsula's easternmost section forms the town of East Rockaway, in suburban Nassau County.
Rockaway was initially settled by the Canarsie tribe, but sold to the Dutch by the Mohegan tribe along with most of Long Island in 1639, and to the British in 1685.

John Jacob Faesch, a Swiss iron master, leased the "plantation" complete with an iron mine, grist and flax mills, apple orchard and meadows, from the Ford family, in 1772 and purchased it in 1792.
Today the Ford-Faesch House is owned by the Rockaway Township and maintained by the Historical Society of the Rockaways.

This shuttle train provides service to the southern part of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens, with a terminus at Beach 116th Street/Rockaway Park.
From 1967 to 1971, the Rockaway Shuttle was lettered "HH" (color: red) and was extended to Euclid Avenue in Brooklyn between roughly midnight and 6:00 A.M., hours when the A-8 Avenue Express did not run to and from Far Rockaway.
Later, the designation "CC" (color: green) was used for the shuttle, although during rush hours this train was extended all the way to Bedford Park Boulevard in the Bronx.
