Amwell was an original Township formed in 1708 when we were still a part of Burlington and it became a Township in the new County of Hunterdon.
Although a monument erected in 1906 by John D. Rockefeller stands in the cemetery at Larison's Corner, it does not mark the actual family ground, which is a half acre set aside by will and mentioned in successive property transfers.
When we became a Township in 1846 the first Township meeting was held at the "Inn of John Menagh in the Village of Mount Airy.'' In April of each year an election was held for public offices, money collected and spent for items ranging from care of the poor to building and repair of roads.

 Lakewood Township: History
This led to the movement to establish the village itself as a Township and on March 23, 1893, the Township of Lakewood was created and incorporated by the State Legislature pursuant to Chapter CXXXI, Laws of 1892.
This building served as the Township Hall until 1924, when a brick structure was erected in the place of the present Municipal Building (which itself was erected in 1969).
The Rockefeller Estate on Ocean Avenue was offered as a gift to the County of Ocean by its trustees; the Gould Estate, along the northern side of Lake Carasaljo, had long since become the site of the present Georgian Court University; the Pack Estate would soon house St. Mary’s Academy.

In 1941, it was widened from Bohrmans Mill to Briar Road, in Ashland, and between Kulpmont and Ranshaw.
In 1946, the route was widened from Port Clinton to Brick Hill Road, Saint Clair to Darkwater, Frackville to Fountain Springs, Centralia to Kulpmont, Ranshaw to Shamokin, and Plum Creek Road to the Rockefeller Township line.
A lot of construction to install medians occurred in 1958 with sections from Leesport to the Windsor Township line, Molino to Deer Lake, Brick Hill Road, Bohrmans Hill, Schuylkill Haven to Saint Clair, Ashland to the Northumberland County line, and Weight Scales to Paxinos.

Their collaborative work grew out of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.'s Committee on Social and Religious Surveys (CSRS) organization, which conducted field surveys on people's religious practices.
In 1923 the CSRS became the Institute for Social and Religious Research, which commissioned new studies; the group's ultimate goal was to unite all Protestant churches in the country in order to create a national network geared toward social service.
Rockefeller's Institute did not approve of the focus of the study, and therefore refused to publish it.
