Rocket propelled grenade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The HE (grenade) warhead is a general-purpose explosive warhead for use against unarmored targets such as infantry, unarmored wheeled vehicles and fixed positions.
This is not meant to imply that an RPG is a cannon, as the smaller over-pressure (compared to a cannon or a rifle) being used to boost the speed of the warhead, is not completely contained and creates the thrust.
RPGs were used extensively against the Soviet intervention forces in Afghanistan by the Mujahedin and against South Africans in Angola by the UNITA rebels.

 How Rocket-Propelled Grenades Work
In this article, we'll investigate the origins of rocket-propelled grenades, how they're used and what makes them so common in military conflicts all over the world.
Firing is usually accomplished through a trigger mechanism, at which point the grenade's rocket engine is activated and a short, high-powered burst of ignited gases launches the grenade for a short distance - maybe between 500 to 1,000 feet (150 to 300 meters) depending on the target and the skill of the operator.
As the grenade leaves the launcher, the fins along the stabilizing pipe spread out, which, along with the rocket motor, allow the grenade to travel a long distance at a potential speed of about 965 feet per second (294 meters per second).
