The second furnace to be built there was the first Rockhill Furnace, which opened in 1831 and remained in almost continuous operation until 1857, reopening briefly during the Civil War.
The foundations of both furnaces are visible in the undergrowth immediately adjacent to U.S. Highway 522 on the southern outskirts of Orbisonia.
The furnaces were very successful in their day, providing the railroad with most of its tonnage and justifying, entirely, the continued existence of the Shade Gap Railroad, at the time a wholly owned subsidiary of the EBT.

Rockhill, which the company originally called "Cromwell," housed the managers and workers of the iron and coke complex as well as employees of the EBT.
The new company town, which was situated on the opposite side of the EBT's Rockhill yard from the blast furnace and coke ovens, usurped the name of the "old" Rockhill Village that had grown up around the charcoal iron furnaces in Blacklog Narrows.
Popular legend has it that the Rockhill furnace died because it couldn't compete with the large integrated iron and steel firms that emerged in the early 20th Century.

In addition, immediate repairs and bracing to make the cars movable and the cost of transportation itself, the protection of the cars once they arrive in Rockhill Furnace and their eventual restoration into narrow gauge showpieces still lies ahead.
Starting last December, members of our Rockhill Furnace work group stripped the car’s exterior wood sheathing, removed the wood end platforms, replaced metal plates attaching the car’s metal framework to its steel underframe, made other needed repairs, and installed the end platforms and new custom-milled sheathing.
