The county is bordered by Maine to the northeast and Massachusetts to the south.
The largest towns in Rockingham County are both in the western part of the county; Derry with a population of 36,500 (approximate) and Salem with a population of 30,000 (approximate).

New Castle was the seat of early provincial governors, including the tyrannical Edward Cranfield, for whom a street is named.
A new route to the island was created in 1821, when three bridges (now two bridges and a causeway) were built to connect Frame Point in Portsmouth with the northwestern corner of Great Island.

Rockingham was identified in 1769 as one of five original counties for the colony.
