Rockland is the smallest county in the state of New York outside of the 5 boroughs of New York City.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older.

The Rockland County Department of Mental Health is a community mental health center funded by State and County government.
Rockland County Unified Services received a Significant Achievement Award from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1983 in recognition of its comprehensive service system, and shared the 1985 APA Gold Award for its contribution to treatment of young adult chronic psychiatric patients.
The towns and villages of Rockland County have not experienced the problems with the mentally ill and homeless mentally ill as has occurred in other parts of the State and nation.
