Rocky Mountain Horse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Around the turn of the century, a young horse soon to be called the Rocky Mountain Horse appeared in eastern Kentucky that gave rise to a line of horses that is prized and treasured by North American and European owners.
The basic characteristics of the breed are a medium sized horse of gentle temperament with an easy-ambling four-beat gait.
This gait made it the horse of choice on the farms and rugged foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

History of the Rocky Mountain Horses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
The Rocky Mountain Horse breed actually hails from the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky, and it was one of the foundations of the family of breeds which developed there.
The Rocky Mountain breed reflects the primitive gaited horse type and may be ancestral to the modern breeds developed later.
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association was formed in the summer of 1986 by those who were interested in maintaining the breed and increase the numbers of this breed, also to expand the area which has knowledge of this fine horse.

Rocky Mountain Horse - The Gaited Horse Magazine
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association was founded in 1986 to oversee the practice of the few remaining horses of the lineage at the time.
Because registering Rocky Mountain Horses is meant to carefully preserve and maintain the unique and cherished qualities of the breed, each horse considered for breeding must first pass an inspection.
Although the silver dapple, chocolate colored horse with the near white mane and tail, have become almost synonymous with the breed, the Rocky Mountain Horse is not a color breed.

These horses have a lot of natural endurance, they are sure-footed on rough ground and, because of their gait, they require a minimum of effort by both horse and rider so that together they can cover a greater distance with less tiring.
The purpose of this association is to maintain the breed, to increase the number of horses in the breed and expand the area, which has knowledge of this fine horse.
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association is incorporated in the state of Kentucky as a non-profit corporation.

Rockies with ASD and, to our present knowledge, those that carry the gene with no expression, have cysts just behind the anterior portion of the eye.
All of our horses, including youngsters for sale, have had their eyes checked by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist and the results are in the process of being registered with the eye data bank at Purdue University.
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association has asked that we use the following classifications: Class I is a horse with normal eyes, Class II is a horse with cysts only, and Class III is a horse with ASD.

When the foal reaches under saddle age (two or older), then that horse is required to prove that they have all of the requirements of a Rocky (or Kentucky) Mountain Horse.
A horse must be between 14.2 - 16 H tall, must have limited white on their bodies, must show proper conformation and disposition, and (most of all) must exhibit the four-beat lateral gait (singlefoot or rack).
This means that we, as owners, must ride this horse (under saddle and with a bit, at this time), and must show that the horse has the proper gait.
