  The Rods from God
These rods, which could be dropped on a target with as little as 15 minutes notice, would enter the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 36,000 feet per second--about as fast as a meteor.
Upon impact, the rod would be capable of producing all the effects of an earth-penetrating nuclear weapon, without any of the radioactive fallout.
It is hard to imagine how the "rods from god" would alter the equation in North Korea, which possesses thousands of rockets and artillery pieces capable of hitting Seoul in retaliation for any perceived act of aggression by the United States.

Rod penetration depth is a multiple of length, however, and the downward-directed pressure wave goes considerably farther.
As for the rods from god, other comments have made the point about their weight (hence cost) and little extra effectiveness compared to conventional penetrators.

RE:Rods From God 6/2/2005 3:49:50 PM Even a KE projectile dropped from low earth orbit would still have insufficient terminal velocity (and net KE) to penetrate more than a few meters, assuming you were able to solve the obvious logistical problems of getting it into orbit, and getting it to survive re-entry.
Even if we were to assume a rod with a mass of several tons and a virtually unlimited terminal velocity, you still wouldnt achieve ground penetration of any signifigant depth.
Even if the rod doesn't penetrate, the resulting shockwave would be enough to shatter the strongest of concrete walls that would compose a bunker.

The reason this idea is so attractive is that the rods would have enough kinetic power to destroy even the deepest known facilities -- many hundreds of feet beneath the Earth's surface.
The other benefit is that the metal rods would constitute a simple, conventional payload, so we wouldn't be "nuking" anybody with them.
And even if rods from God did succeed, it would probably be a one-time thing, like the Israeli raid on Osiraq.

Pike, of GlobalSecurity.org, argues that the rods’ speed would be so high that they would vaporize on impact, before the rods could penetrate the surface.
A better solution, Pike argues, is to pursue the original concept: Place the rods atop intercontinental ballistic missiles, which would slow down enough during the downward part of their trajectory to avoid vaporizing on impact.

I mean, we can't expect these rods to survive re-entry equipped with fins and GPS receivers for pinpoint delivery to a fixed target, so they better blow up a large area when they deliver their kenetic energy.
A little calculation suggests that a tungsten rod 12 inches in diameter and 20 feet long traveling at 36000 fps would have a kinetic energy of 12 trillion ft-lbs, 12,000,000,000 ft-lbs.
However, even dropping the rod straight down from orbit would still require complex three dimensional trajectory calculations, not to mention some type of guidance and steering system, in order to have anything approaching useful accuracy.
