  Rod (cryptozoology)
A rather new entry in the field of Cryptozoology, rods are presumed creatures that flit about in the air at such a high speed as to not be seen by the naked eye.
Their behavior as captured on film leads studiers of the phenomenon to posit they are a kind of "air-fish", moving in a similar fashion to fish in water, and having a body like that of a jellyfish.
Rods are not taken seriously even by most cryptozoologists, who tend to look on them as forteana.

They appear to be anywhere from 5 inches to 1 meter in length, and it is proposed by that they have a thin membrane across their axis that is used for propulsion through the air, in a manner similar to the way a cuttlefish uses its fins.
Rods are not classified as atmospheric beasts because rods are nearly always described as much smaller than atmospheric beasts, as invisible to the naked eye, and in addition rods have a much shorter history as a subject of research in the fields of cryptozoology and the paranormal.
In particular, the "membrane" in a video frame of a rod is effectively a time-lapse of the wings of the flying animal in different positions over several wingbeats, while the central "rod" is a time-lapse image of the body, related to the distance traveled in 1/60th of a second.

Rod (cryptozoology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rods appear to be observational artifacts produced by rapidly flying animals.
The effect is especially pronounced with large, long-bodied insects that have broad wings and fairly slow wingbeats, such as mantises, grasshoppers, and katydids, or completely opaque wings such as moths.
On video equipment that resolves the two fields, the "rod" effect can be seen to alternate from one field to the other, producing the distinctive gaps between successive images ([1]).

 X-Project: Roswell Rods
Rods are thin, unidentified organic life forms that fly (or ride air currents) in the sky.
Also, a swarm of insects forming a line could be mistaken for a rod, as hundreds of insect bodies appear to be a single solid object.
I am not necessarily dismissing the idea that rods are a strange new life form, but I feel we need more conclusive evidence before jumping to the conclusion that they are indeed real.

All evidence points to the conclusion that they are mere tricks of light that affect the camera eye.Their recent popularity seems to be a result of media exposure in television tabloids.

The Cryptid Zoo: Air Rods in Cryptozoology
To believers in the cryptozoology-based theory of air rods, air rods are probably living creatures, and they are possibly related to older stories of atmospheric beasts.
Also, since rods are blurry, a great number of rather ordinary things that probably are random anamalies of film developing or hairs on the camera lens have been identified as air rods by amateurs.
If air rods are made of some sort of electromagnetic flux and are not alive, they should still be studied because they represent a weird phenomena that science could probably learn a lot from.

Xenophilia - Sky Fish / Rods
If the phenomenon of Rods can be exactly re-created by motion blurred insects, (such as in the photo to the right of Tiphiid Wasps) then the most simple explanation is: Rods are motion blurred insects.
You may be convinced, but you should always consider what evidence might disprove your theory in the future: A photo of a nonmoving rod, a physical sample of a dead rod, or a rod captured in an enclosure, for example, would cause me to change my mind.
It would reasonable to conclude that all rods are therefore motion blurred bugs were it not for one seemingly credible eye-witness who reports stunning, holding and releasing a rod that was not an insect.

This discovery has, however, been quietly ignored by those in the business of "researching" the flying rod phenomenon, as their wealth and fame could obviously be shattered with such a revelation.
Rods are also mentioned in the anime Zettai Shounen as being possibly related to the flying objects seen in the valley where the story takes place.

This study demonstrates that all of the "rod" pictures on Jose Escamilla's www.roswellrod.com site show a "rod" length-to-speed correlation that is consistent with the motion blur pattern created by a flying insect, if the insect is videographed with a CCD camera using either 1/60 or 1/100 second exposures.
The site also presents pictures of motion-blurred insects showing this same "rod-like" length-to-speed pattern, and showing that flapping insect wings can duplicate undulating or sinusoidal "rod" wing patterns when shot at these slow shutter speeds.

Literally cryptozoology translates to "the study of hidden animals." An example would be like Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster, however the animal does not have to be so famous.
