  Encyclopedia
Rodeo is a traditional folk North American sport with influences from the history of Mexican vaqueros (cowboys) and American cowboys.
Rodeo events include the rough stock events bull riding, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, the timed events steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping, the rarely seen steer roping, and women's barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat roping and pole bending.
The rodeo associations have made some changes to reduce the chances of injury, such as requiring older, heavier calves for calf roping, larger steers for steer wrestling and many rodeos no longer have steer roping.

But what’s kept Rodeo going for 60 years is the intersection of Copland’s score and de Mille’s iconic tableaux: the Jewish homosexual yearning for community, the self-described ugly duckling yearning for acceptance, the result a John Ford Western with a WPA sensibility and sets by Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood.
Well, it’s all very silly, but the audience is supposed to know this and appreciate the corps de ballet’s bumps and shimmies, the sexy allure of the ballerina-as-stripper, and the choreographer’s digs at formulaic honky-tonk show numbers.

All through Gong, the pure lines of ballet are wittily undermined, and then rejuvenated, by the angular shapes of eastern dancing, whether real, imagined or made in Taiwan.
The varied sections of the work offer academic movement salted with that tilt of the pelvis, or hands pagoda-like over the head, which lend fascination to women's dance in Bali, and the twist of flavour that comes with flexed feet and hints of male postures from the island's dance-dramas.

Hoedown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 19th century the hoedown was mainly associated with African-Americans, and was a dance in quick movement most likely related to the jig, reel or clog dance; however by the early 20th century the term was mainly associated with white Americans, particularly in rural or western parts of the country.
The most famous hoedown in classical music is the section entitled Hoedown from the Rodeo ballet by Aaron Copland (1942).
The most frequently heard version is from the Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, which Copland extracted from the ballet shortly after its premiere; the dance episodes were first performed in 1943 by the Boston Pops conducted by Arthur Fiedler.

The ballet was precedent setting - there were said to be 22 curtain calls at its premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House on October 16, 1942 - and the success of this ballet insured that dance would thrive as an integral part of American musical theater.
According to de Mille, the idea of doing a ballet for the Ballet Russe, a company with a decidedly 19th-century bent, did not immediately inspire Copland in their first meeting.

Century ballets (Stravinsky's Firebird and Ravel's Daphnis come immediately to mind), and the brief transitions between the familiar numbers are all quite interesting - or so it seems thanks to Zinman's attentive and sympathetic treatment.
In Rodeo, a raucous 'Ranch house party' and deliciously coquettish addition just before the end the 'Hoe-down' are equally welcome.

 MUSICMATCH Guide: Aaron Copland
As one of the first wave of literary and musical expatriates in Paris during the 1920s, Copland returned to the United States with the means to assume, for the next half century, a central role in American music as composer, promoter, and educator.
This is nowhere more in evidence than in Copland's ballets of this period, and it finally earned him the respect of the general public.
While Copland gradually became less prolific from the mid-1950s on, he continued to experiment and explore "fresh" means of musical expression, including a highly individual adoption of 12-tone principles in works like the Piano Fantasy and Connotations for orchestra.
