The station itself was opened by the London and North Eastern Railway, successors to the GER, on 3 February 1936 to service to new housing developments between Buckhurst Hill and Woodford, and named after the valley of the River Roding which is close by.
On 29 November 1947 the LNER line was closed for alterations to form part of the Central line extensions, and Roding Valley was re-opened on 21 November 1948 as a London Underground Tube station on the Hainault Loop.
Roding Valley is served by the Central Line with services running between Woodford and Hainault until 2000hrs daily, with most services continuing onwards via Newbury Park to central London.
