The series was produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation and ran on Network Ten for 692 episodes from 1979 to 1986.
The first major story arc-defining event in the series is the turf war for top dog status between Bea Smith and Franky Doyle, culminating in a prison riot in which Meg Jackson is held hostage, and her husband, prison psychiatrist Bill Jackson (Don Barker), is stabbed to death by inmate Chrissie Latham (Amanda Muggleton).
Because the series was shown on all ITV companies late at night (just before closedown at first, then as the first programme of night-time programming with the advent of 24-hour broadcasting in the late 1980s), it became a favourite of the local continuity announcers.

Their faces, luminously featured as in so much serial melodrama, are shown as grainy and interesting, faces full of character, of signs of hardship and suffering, alternately soft and hard, happy and depressed, angry or bored.
As dramaturgy Prisoner revels in the possibilities of the TV serial form, of cliffhangers at the end of episodes, intensifying melodrama as (in Peter Brooks' terms in The Melodramatic Imagination) an aesthetic of excess.

Star Trek started out as a TV series and done well with the Movies..Starwars has been nothing short of magnificant on the big screen and I believe it can be the same or more on the tube aswell.
Tv almost always ends up being shallower and less emotionally intense, and in a story where the special effects take a big part just out of necessity due to the setting (futuristic fantasy) theres gonna be even less room for good writing.
A tv series will probably never reach the potential of a movie, but it still has the ability to be great.
