  G'Night, Mate--Real Crocodile Dundee Killed - Aug 05, 1999 - E! Online News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Rodney William Ansell, the Australian national hero whose bushman ways inspired the 1986 Academy Award-nominated Paul Hogan-hit, Crocodile Dundee, and its 1988 sequel, Crocodile Dundee II, was killed in a police shootout Tuesday morning.
Ansell, 44, reportedly ambushed two Down Under police officers, who were in the process of dismantling a roadblock meant to net the fugitive outdoor survival maven just outside the northern Aussie city of Darwin.
Ansell's money situation reportedly bottomed out in the early '90s, and he was said to be miffed at the local government for not compensating him enough after he killed off 3,000 head of his own cattle to comply with a disease eradication effort.

Buffalo hunter Rodney Ansell became a modern Australian legend after surviving two months alone in the bush in 1977, staying alive by shooting sharks and buffalo and drinking their blood after a giant crocodile attacked and sank his fishing boat on the Fitzmaurice River.
Ansell, 44 and the father of two teen-agers, was honored by the Northern Territory Government as "Territorian of the Year" in 1988.
In fact, when Ansell was forced to sell his beloved cattle ranch (the Aussies call them "stations") in the Mary River wetlands 70 miles east of Darwin in 1991, he reported he was living on unemployment benefits and hunting small game for food.
