Del Boy's foils was his younger brother Rodney Trotter, gauche and easily misled ("a right plonker" according to his sibling, who used--or rather misused-him) and played with pained indignation by former child actor Nicholas Lyndhurst.
The premise was that Rodney had never known his father and could not remember his mother, who had died when he was a baby, thus leaving him in the care of his scornful but devoted brother.
There were, however, some changes in the Trotter household, notably Rodney's disaster-strewn romance and eventual marriage to City banker Cassandra and Del Boy's liaison with actress Raquel, which led ultimately to the birth of the first of a future generation of Trotter entrepreneurs, the ominously-named Damien.

Derek "Del Boy" Trotter (the signature role for veteran comedy actor David Jason (A Touch of Frost, The Darling Buds of May, Open All Hours, Micawber)) is the street-smart, smooth-talking, self-confident, self-important "brains" of the business (and I use the term loosely!).
Rodney hasn't half the street-smarts as Del; as a result, he makes some nearly fatal errors in judgement--like asking a police woman out on a date (he has a thing for women in uniforms!), or falling asleep while he's on duty as "lookout" while Del flogs the goods.
Rodders (Rodney, or Dave, as Trigger [one of their pub pals] calls him; played by Nicholas Lyndhurst) is Del's younger brother and, usually, a reluctant sidekick to Del's nutty ideas.

ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES | A TELEVISION HEAVEN REVIEW
The Trotter family which consisted of naive younger brother Rodney and their Grandad very soon became the best known characters on British television and 'Del Boy' became something of a national institution.
Further 'specials' appeared to suffer from a lack of sharpness in both script and (surpisingly) performances and many fans and critics alike felt that it was a mistake to revisit the Trotter homestead, where British sitcom arguably enjoyed some of it's finest hours.
Ultimately, the misadventures of the Trotter family seems to hold the considerable distinction of being, thus far, one of the last of the genuinely 'classic' comedies produced by British television -to find a warmly welcomed place within the collective hearts of the viewing public.
