Pope Alexander VI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexander VI, (Rodrigo Borgia) (January 1, 1431 August 18, 1503) pope (1492-1503), is the most memorable of the secular popes of the Renaissance.
He was born at Xàtiva, València, Spain, and his father's surname was Lanzol or Llançol; that of his mother's family, Borgia or Borja, was assumed by him on the elevation of his maternal uncle to the papacy as Callixtus III (April 8, 1455).
Borgia's elevation did not at the time excite much alarm, and at first his reign was marked by a strict administration of justice and an orderly method of government in satisfactory contrast with the anarchy of the previous pontificate, as well as by great outward splendour.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Pope Alexander VI
Rodrigo Borgia, born at Xativa, near Valencia, in Spain, 1 January, 1431; died in Rome, 18 August, 1503.
To the Romans especially, who had come to regard Borgia as one of themselves, and who predicted a pontificate at once splendid and energetic, the choice was most acceptable; and they manifested their joy in bonfires, torchlight processions, garlands of flowers, and the erection of triumphal arches with extravagant inscriptions.
It was the political use made by the Borgias of their opportunity, and the prospective alliance of France and the Holy See, which now drove several of the Powers of Europe to the verge of schism.

 Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia)
Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), memorable as the most characteristic incarnation of the secular spirit of the papacy of the 15th century, was born at Xativa in Valencia, 1st January 1431.
Borgia's uneasiness was betrayed by his hasty assumption of the pontifical vestments, and premature announcement of the election to the expectant crowd.
They are unproved as yet, but are certainly countenanced by the opulence of the supposed victims, and the avidity with which the pope pounced upon their effects, especially in the case of his rapacious datary, Cardinal Ferrari.

 Histories/ Lucrezia Borgia
Once she was remarried, Rodrigo found it in himself to remove the children from their mother's home and place them all under the care of his cousin and fellow-Spaniard, Adriana de Mila.
All of that changed and Lucrezia and the rest of her family were catapulted to center stage when Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia became Pope Alexander VI in 1492 A.D. Lucrezia was twelve years old and her charmed life of protective obscurity was at an end.
The Borgias were seen as the epitome of corruption and the fact that the Pope's daughter was quite attractive made it seem likely - almost desirable - for there to be incest in the family.

Lucrezia was educated according to the usual curriculum of Renaissance ladies of rank, and was taught languages, music, embroidery, painting, andc.; she was famed for her beauty and charm, but the corrupt court of Rome in which she was brought up was not conducive to a good moral education.
She devoted herself to the education of her children and to charitable works; the only tragedy connected with this period of her life is the murder of Ercole Strozzi, who is said to have admired her and fallen a victim to Alphonsos jealousy.
She died on the 24th of June 1519, leaving three sons and a daughter by the duke of Ferrara, besides one son Rodrigo by the duke of Bisceglie, and possibly another of doubtful paternity.
