Topic: Rodrigo Moscoso

  Panama HISTORY
Its candidate, Mireya Moscoso (who is the widow of Arias), swept the elections on 2 May 1999.
Moscoso, who had run in 1994 and lost (to Pérez Balladeres), defeated Torrijos in what was considered a fair election; 75% of the country's 2.7 million citizens voted.
As the first woman president of Panama, Moscoso has faced ongoing criticism from her opposition regarding her lack of experience and her inability to reverse the trend of increasing levels of unemployment, poverty, and worsening social services in Panama.
