Rodrigues (or, incorrectly, Rodriguez) is one of the Mascarene Islands and a dependency of Mauritius.
The Rodrigues People's Organisation was established in 1976 to campaign for autonomy, which was partly achieved in 2001 when a regional assembly was set up on the island.
Rodrigues is a volcanic island arising from a ridge along the edge of the Mascarene Plateau.

Rodrigues (109 km²) is located 574km east of Mauritius and the smallest and reputedly the youngest of the Mascarene Islands with rocks being dated at only 1.5million years old.
Rodrigues is the only Mascarene Island with extensive limestone deposits, and is surrounded by a large fringing reef that encloses eighteen small islets.

Rodrigues was born into a Jewish family which was almost certainly of Portuguese origin (although some claim that the family were of Spanish origin).
Rodrigues was awarded a doctorate in mathematics from the École Normale in 1816 for a thesis that contains one of the two results for which he is known today, namely the Rodrigues formula for Legendre polynomials.
Really Rodrigues was remarkably poorly appreciated by his contemporaries both as a mathematician, where he showed remarkable intuition in studying important problems, and as a social reformer where many of his views have at last become the accepted ones.
