Roger Ascham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ascham was educated not at school, but in the house of Sir Humphry Wingfield, a barrister, and in 1533 Speaker of the House of Commons, as Ascham himself tells us, in the Toxophilus where they were under a tutor named R Bond.
From this private tuition Ascham was sent "about 1530," at the age, it is said, of fifteen, to St John's College, Cambridge, then the largest and most learned college in either university, where he devoted himself specially to the study of Greek, then newly revived.
In 1548, Ascham, as one of the ablest Greek scholars in England, and public orator of the university, was called to court as tutor to princess (afterwards Queen) Elizabeth in Greek and Latin, which he did until 1550.

Ascham left the university in 1548 after being handpicked by Princess Elizabeth to be her tutor, beginning a twenty-year association with the future queen that would outlast the two-year tenure of his official tutorship.
Ascham’s ultimate aim was to teach his students judicious imitation of the best writers, either by a similar treatment of dissimilar material or a dissimilar treatment of dissimilar material.

Ascham pleads for style: “ye know not what hurt ye do to learning that are not for words but for matter, and do make a divorce betwixt the tongue and the heart.” The secret of true imitation is to read exactly and, at the same time, to read widely.

Roger Ascham (1515-1568) was one of the most likeable of the early humanists--those who brought the revival of classical learning to England in the early renaissance.
Both Ascham and his friend, Sir John Cheke (1514-1557) were opposed to what Ascham called "inkhorn terms"--words coined from Latin or Greek to make English sound more impressive (the modern equivalent might be jargon, gobbledygook, or Watergate English).
At one stage Elyot was at a loss for a word to try to describe one of the ultimate aims of education, and he chose to use (to "usurp," he says) a Latin word--you will see how right he was to introduce it to the language.
