 Christie Agatha Criticism and Essays
Christie was born September 15, 1890, in Torquay, England to Frederick Alvah Miller, a wealthy American, and Clarissa Boehmer Miller.
In it she established many of the elements which she continued to employ for fifty years: a country setting, a formulaic structure in which all is not what it seems, and a detective who keeps clues to himself, making a startling revelation of guilt and innocence in a final meeting of all the characters.
Commentators critical of Christie's work describe her style as undistinguished, charge that her characters are stereotypical and lack depth, and lament the absence of any sociological analysis of the crimes.

Agatha Christie's private detective Hercule Poirot and mystery devotees alike have presumed for three quarters of a century that Dr. James Sheppard, the narrator of the 1926 novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, is the only possible culprit in the title character's death.
He attempts to use psychoanalysis to probe Christie's characters, even though judging them according to Freudian theory is akin to using calculus as a device for counting to ten.
Appling critical analysis to Christie's solution seems no less absurd than Tey's re-analysis of Richard III in Daughter of Time, the endless books on Jack the Ripper's identity, or decades of English literature classes convinced that the author is the last person to understand the significance of his own works.

Christie's most characteristic works set eight to ten people in a closed environment.
The people are usually those associated with the British upper classes, their servants, friends, and relatives, and the setting usually a village or large country house (both of which appear in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd).
Christie also used trains, boats, airplanes, and islands to provide the insular setting she needed for the investigation of crime, but she was at her best when dealing with the village crime and its attendant suspicion, fear, and gossip, as in The Moving Finger.
