 NZDWFC: TSV2: Roger Delgado
Roger Delgado was cast, and with his background of playing many villains, his portrayal of the Master as a renegade Time Lord as hell-bent on evil and destruction as the Doctor is on peace and justice, was an instant success.
Even though Delgado was able to play the Master in only eight stories (Terror of the Autons, The Mind of Evil, The Claws of Axos, Colony in Space, The Daemons, The Sea Devils, The Time Monster and Frontier in Space) before his tragic death in 1973, he remains one of the most popular villains ever.
Even though Delgado played the Master with such relish, off the screen he was a charming and friendly man, fondly remembered by colleagues and fans alike.

 BBC - h2g2 - Roger Delgado - Actor
Roger made his first appearance as The Master on 2 January 1971, in the first of a four part story called 'Terror of The Autons'.
Roger was great at a dinner party - he was a fine conversationalist - but he was a very, very shy man. He wasn't very outgoing at all.
It's testament to Delgado's skills as an actor that he managed to both charm and terrify a nation of children as the Master, creating a charismatic character that lived on after his death with no less than five other actors taking on the role at different times in the series' later years.

Actor Roger Delgado was born Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto on 1 March 1918 in Whitechapel, London.
On the silver screen, Delgado appeared in The Captain's Glory, The Power and the Glory, Powell and Pressburger's epic The Battle of the River Plate (with Patrick Macnee), First Man into Space and, for Hammer Films, a famed British independent studio, he participated in Terror of the Tongs and The Mummy's Shroud.
As with many of television's darkest villains--and there can be no doubt that Delgado was indeed one of the medium's most effective bad guys--off screen, as has been commented upon on many occasions, Roger Delgado was one of the most gentle, kind and likeable actors in the business.

 A Tribute -- Roger Delgado
It would be a tragedy if the passing of Roger Delgado should be noted mainly because of his success as a "villain" and particularly in a popular television series.
Roger's parts on television certainly demanded much of him and he responded to them; but his television performances threaten to overshadow the work of an actor of breadth and sensibility in other spheres, with a range well beyond the television stereotype.
His television career has tended to obscure the beauty of his delivery on BBC Radio--the Morning Story is very much a case in point--and I have myself worked happily and constructively with Roger on television documentaries where his commentaries were of rare sensitivity.

Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasence, prior to their horror stardom; Yvonne Mitchell, Andre Morell, Roger Delgado, Barry Letts, Patrick Troughton, John Robinson; and Paul Whitsun-Jones was another example of this breed.
Corpulent, with thick fl hair and often seen as appropriately solid authority figures, whether comically pompous or threatening in an oily manner, Whitsun-Jones facially resembled a heftier and rather bad-tempered version of Peter Bowles; his Avengers appearances are pretty representative of his work, respectively taking in Government man, fat villain and eccentric innocent bystander.
It ran for two series, from which no episodes exist now; each episode took place at a different point in history, but with the same actors playing the various family members, among them Roger Delgado, in a tailor-made role as a sword-wielding Spaniard, and Whitsun-Jones as a family butler.
