Roger A. Morse, Ph.D. July 5, 1927 - May 12, 2000) was a bee biologist who taught many beekeepers both the rudiments and the finer practices, through his research and publications.
Morse was extensively involved in research on each of these and provided guidance to the beekeeping industry.
Morse was born in Saugerties, New York, served in the U. Army from 1944 to 1947.

In the mid-1990s, Morse estimated that as many as 45 billion bees from 750,000 colonies were killed by microscopic tracheal mites that harbored themselves in the adult bees' breathing tubes and by varroa mites that literally draw the life out of an adult bee.
Morse earned all three of his postsecondary degrees from Cornell: a bachelor's in 1950, a master's in 1953 and a doctorate in 1955.
Morse had been a visiting professor at the University of Helsinki, Finland; the University of S‹o Paulo, Brazil; and at the University of the Philippines at Los Ba—os.

Morse got a financial and lab mentor in railroad heir Alfred Vail who is reported to have suggested a change from the all-number code to one where each letter, number, and common punctuation mark has a unique dot-dash group.
ROGER -- "in the meaning of 'Yes, O.K., I understand you -- is voice code for the letter R. It is part of the 'Able, Baker, Charlie' code known and used by all radiophone operators in the services in the 40's - 50's.
The comma was transmitted by Morse operators and thus, AA came to mean that the receiving operator should "drop down one line" when sent after each part of the address and it is so defined in the operating manuals of the time.

Roger Morse, renowned professor of apiculture at Cornell University’s Department of Entomology, and seven of his graduate students, regularly conducted research on honey bee behavior and biology at Archbold, 1963-1998.
After his retirement from Cornell’s faculty, Roger started work on a biography of Richard Archbold, visiting libraries and archives in New York (and especially at the American Museum of Natural History) during the summer, and combing the Station’s rich historical archives during the winter.
Sadly, Roger Morse died on 12 May 2000 at his home in Ithaca, New York, just a few weeks after the book was published.

Roger Morse had a life long interest in mead and meadmaking, going back to his graduate days at the University of Cornell and likely earlier.
Morse remained a promoter of meadmaking, offering help to meadmakers in other countries on his many trips, and later wrote a book titled _Making Mead_, published in 1980 by Wicwas press.
Roger Morse commented, in his book _Making Mead_ that he could argue against Brother Adam's methods of making mead, but he could not argue against the quality of his meads, which were excellent.
