Roger Di Flor - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
ROGER DI FLOR, a military adventurer of the 13th-14th century, was the second son of a falconer in the service of the emperor Frederick II., who fell at Tagliacozzo (1268), and when eight years old was sent to sea in a galley belonging to the Knights Templars.
At the siege of Acre by the Saracens in 1291 he was accused and denounced to the pope as a thief and an apostate, was degraded from his rank, and fled to Genoa, where he began to play the pirate.
Roger was now created Caesar, but shortly afterwards the young emperor Michael Palaeologus, not daring to attack the fierce and now augmented bands of adventurers, invited Roger to Adrianople, and there contrived his assassination and the massacre of his Catalan cavalry (April 4, 1306).

Chapter 10: A History of Aragon and Catalonia
Roger had not forgotten the kindness that he had received from Entenza in his early years and was prepared to resign his title of Megaduc and his position to the new arrival.
Roger was received by Michael with a great show of amiability and a series of banquets and entertainments; but on April 4, 1305, a treacherous attack was made upon the Catalans in the course of a banquet.
Roger and all the Catalan leaders who were taking part were assassinated and the Byzantine mercenaries attacked and killed the escort with the exception of two or three who escaped to Gallipoli.

 Roger di Flor
Roger di Flor, a military adventurer of the 13th and 14th century, was the second son of a falconer in the service of the emperor Frederick II, who fell at Tagliacozzo (1268).
At the close of the war, in 1302, as Frederick was anxious to free the island from his mercenary troops (called Almogávares), whom he had no longer the means of paying, Roger induced them under his leadership to seek new adventures in the East, in fighting against the Turks, who were ravaging the empire.
The emperor Andronicus II accepted his offer of service; and in September 1303 Roger with his fleet and army arrived at Constantinople.

 Andronicus II
He allowed the fleet, which his father had organized, to fall into decay; and the empire was thus less able than ever to resist the exacting demands of the rival powers of Venice and Genoa.
During his reign the Turks under Osman conquered nearly the whole of Bithynia; and to resist them the emperor called in the aid of Roger di Flor, who commanded a body of Spanish adventurers.
The Turks were defeated, but Roger was found to be nearly as formidable an enemy to the imperial power.

 Catalan Company (DBA 165)
De Flor negotiated a good deal with the Byzantine Emperor, Andronikos II, who desperately needed mercenaries to fight the Turks after the Byzantine at Nicomedia in July 1302.
Needless to say, this put him at odds with the Byzantine Emperor, and eventually led to De Flor's assassination in an Alan ambush at 1305 and the subsequent Byzantine massacre of as many of the Catalan Company as they could reach.
The Byzantine emperor then attempted to stop the Catalans with a large army, but was defeated at Apros in 1305; in part because the Alans, fearful of Catalan wrath at the loss of de Flor, deserted the Byzantine army in the field.
