Rogier Van Der Weyden - LoveToKnow 1911
Two pictures of St Luke painting the Virgin, at Brussels and St Petersburg respectively, are attributed to him.
Van der Weyden attracted many foreigners, notably Martin Schongauer, to his studio, and he became one of the main influences in the northern art of the 15th century.
His descendant, Rogier Van Der Weyden the younger, is known to have entered the Antwerp gild in 1528, but no work of his has yet been satisfactorily authenticated.

Roger was born at Tournai, where in 1427 he entered the studio of Robert Campin, previously known as the Master of Flémalle.

Rog(i)er van der Weyden, also known as Roger de la Pasture or Rogier de Bruxelles, (1399/1400 - June 18, 1464) was a Flemish painter.
It is generally accepted that this is Rogier van der Weyden (the French and Flemish forms of the name both meaning `Rogier of the Meadow'), although it is uncertain why he should have started his apprenticeship so late.
Unlike Jan van Eyck he seems to have had a large workshop with numerous assistants and pupils, and many of his compositions are known in several versions.

School Of Roger Van Der Weyden
Roger certainly spent some time in Ferrara, where his presence can scarcely have been without influence on the school of painting which was just coming into life there.
Roger van der Weyden's influence on contemporary art was so far-reaching that, though the number of works known to be actually from his own hand is small, there are in nearly every gallery some anonymous or wrongly-named pictures which evidently belong to his school.
The beautiful cherry-red of the Virgin's drapery, a favourite colour with Memlinc, is repeated in the canopy of her richly-decorated throne, hung with a strip of costly brocade, boldly patterned in fl and gold, and in the oriental carpet at her feet.

 Biography
Jan van Eyck, the great painter from Bruges, also profoundly affected the developing artist, introducing elegance and subtle visual refinements into the bolder, Campinesque components of such early paintings by Rogier as St.
Although as an apprentice Rogier must certainly have met Jan van Eyck when the latter visited Tournai in 1427, it was more likely in Bruges, where Rogier may have resided between 1432 and 1435, that he became thoroughly acquainted with van Eyck's style.
Every Flemish painter of the succeeding generation - Petrus Christus, Dierik Bouts, Hugo van der Goes, and Hans Memling (who may have studied in Rogier's atelier) - depended on his formulations; and, during the 16th century, Rogierian ideas were transformed and revitalized by Quentin Massys and Bernard van Orley.

 Stockt - AMAM
Works ascribed to Vrancke van der Stockt are distinguished by their slim, elegant figures with rather angular, mannered silhouettes; they are further characterized by a consistent use of Rogerian motifs, repeated virtually unchanged from the original.
The inclusion of Christ's temptations in representations of the Baptist is relatively rare; the central panel of Rogier's Saint John Altarpiece in Berlin, representing the Baptism of Christ, incorporates the three temptations of Christ in the painted archivolt surrounding the scene and probably served as a prototype for van der Stockt's composition.
Van der Stockt was a friend and possibly a collaborator of van der Weyden, and succeeded him as official painter to the town of Brussels in 1464.

Van der Weyden, who knew so well how to instil much sensuality in his works, managed to transmit his emotional art to two of his main pupils, Thierry Bouts and Hans Memling with whom the school of Bruges managed to shine for another few decades.

Hubert was the oldest of the Van Eyck (Flemish painter who was a founder of the Flemish school of painting and who pioneered modern techniques of oil painting (1390-1441)) family of painters.
After this great work was finished it was placed, in 1432, on an altar in St Bavon of Ghent, with an inscription on the framework describing Hubert as “maior quo nemo repertus,” and setting forth, in colours as imperishable as the picture itself, that Hubert began and Jan afterwards brought it to perfection.
Jan van Eyck certainly wished to guard against an error which ill-informed posterity showed itself but too prone to foster, the error that he alone had composed and carried out an altarpiece executed jointly by Hubert and himself.

Long hidden in the shadows of Jan van Eyck and Roger van der Weyden, Petrus Christus was one of the crucial painters active in the complex development of Flemish painting during a period of remarkable vitality and attainment.
From the time of Jan van Eyck's death in 1441 to the arrival of Hans Memling in 1465, Christus was the only panel painter who lived in Bruges whose oeuvre is known.
While Upton acknowledges the acclaimed virtuosity of Jan and Roger in the portrayal of religious truths through compelling physical and emotional specificity, he argues that they preserve a conceptual distance between the image and the beholder that Christus deliberately closed.

This is not a biography of van Eyck nor is it a comprehensive analysis of all of the painter's work.
The early Netherlandish painters, such as Dirk Bouts, Roger van der Weyden, Robert Campin, Hans Memling, and Petrus Christus, are characterized by their crystalline light, saturated colors, and obsession with clearly-rendered detail.
However, Jan van Eyck's realism, especially his sensitively wrought faces, his evocative landscapes, and his almost miraculous ability to render the textures of brocade, metal, glass, armor, and architecture, was the never-surpassed inspiration for so many of his contemporaties and followers.
