While Sri Lanka, via Asian championship double gold medalist Rohan Pradeep Kumara, Olympic medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe, and Nadeeka Lakmali won three gold medals respectively in the men’s and women 200m, and women’s Javelin Throw, Indian dominance was evident on the first day itself of the four-day track and field competition of the eight-nation Games.
In the men’s 200m, Rohan Pradeep Kumara was no where near his Games record timing of 20.99 seconds in Islamabad two years ago, but the former sailor still clocked 21.14 seconds.

In the men’s 400m heats Roahan Pradeep Kumara finished first in the first heat with a time of 46.46 seconds while his team mate Prasanna Amarasekera clinched the second place in the first heat with a time of 46.69 seconds to earn his place in the men’s 400m finals.
Rohan Pradeep Kumara, Rohitha Pushpakumara, Lanka Perera and Prasanna Amarasekera finished first in the first heat of the event with a time of 3 minutes 07:98 second to earn a place in the finals on Friday which is schedule to get under way tomorrow (Sunday).

ISLAMABAD, April 3 - Sri Lankan athletes Susanthika Jayasinghe, Rohan Pradeep Kumara, M. Sifrath and swimmer Francis won gold medals for their country at the 9th SAF games in Islamabad today.
Jayasinghe won her pet event the 200m clocking 23.49 secs, she was followed by compatriot Sujani Buddhika who took the silver for the event.
Meanwhile Rohan Pradeep Kumara won the 200 metres with a run overtaking clocked 20.99 secs for the 200m event Lanka's other competitor in this event, Ranga Wimalawansa finish as the fifth with a time of 21.75 secs.

Prasanna Amarasekera accounted for the silver medal, in 46-11 seconds, finishing behind his rival from Japan while compatriot Rohan Pradeep Kumara settled for the bronze medal in a keenly contested final.
Amarasekera, who beat Pradeep Kumara in one of the three 2005 Asian Grand Prix finals, had taken the lead in the 400m only in the 50m of the final.
Reports from Korea said former Asian Championship gold medallist Rohan Pradeep was in the lead with the Japanese upto the 350s mark but it was then that Amarasekera had fired all his cylinders to go pass the team mate.

ATHLETICS: Sri Lankan sprinters Rohan Pradeep Kumara Fernando and Prasanna Sampath Amarasekera will represent Asia as the cream of world class athletes vie for a fat purse of over US Dollars 2.8 million at the IAAF World Cup to be worked off in the Greek capital of Athens this weekend.
Of the other South Asian athletes besides Pradeep Kumara and Amarasekera, Indians Navpreet Singh (men's shot putt), Manjeet Kaur (women's 400m) and Pinki Paramanik (women's 800m) too will be seen in action at the IAAF World Cup finals scheduled to be worked off at the Athens Olympic Stadium on September 16 (Saturday) and September 17(Sunday).
Accordingly, Rohan Pradeep and Amarasekera would pocket another US Dollars 750 each, even if their Asian men's 4 x 400m relay team finishes last.

There was one record set yesterday that came in the women’s high jump event when Army’s Tharanga Vinodani eclipsed the national record of 1.71 set by Kurunegala DCA’s R.K.P. Maduwanthi in 2003 with a jump of 1.74m.
The biggest surprise of the day’s proceedings was the elimination of the men’s 200m record holder Prasanna Amarasekera who was pushed to the third slot with S.M. Weerasooriya of Navy winning the race with a timing of 21.19 seconds and 400 m specialist Rohan Pradeep Kumara coming in second.
Rohan Pradeep Kumara went on to take the first place in the first heat of the 400m while former champion Sugath Tillekeratne who is making a come back came second in the second heat of the same event.

Controversial sprinter Rohan Pradeep Kumara has denied taking banned substances following the finding of two syringes in the hotel room he stayed in, during the Asian Grand Prix meet in Bangkok recently, Secretary of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL), Prema Pinnawela told 'The Island' on Wednesday.
Rohan Pradeep ran for Sri Lanka at the Bangkok leg of the Asian Grand Prix along with another 400 metres runner Prasanna Ameresekera of Army SC.
Pinnawela also said a detailed report on Rohan Pradeep Kumara's stay in Bangkok will be forwarded shortly to AASL President, Minister Janaka Bandara Tennekoon who returned to the country on Tuesday.
