This is because Tolkien saw the relationship between Rohirric and the Common Speech.
Only a few actual Rohirric words are given by Tolkien: kûd-dûkan, an old word meaning "hole-dweller" which led to kuduk, the name the Hobbits had for themselves.
The only other Rohirric given is the element "lô–"/"loh–" corresponding to Anglo-Saxon "éo", horse, and the derived names Lôgrad for Horse-Mark, and Lohtûr for Éothéod, horse-people, or horse-land.

Hobbit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
When later he began to work out the language relations further, Hobbit was to be derived from the Rohirric (actually Anglo-Saxon - which Rohirric parallels in Tolkien's universe) Holbytlan (hole builders).
In the original Westron, the name was Kuduk (Hobbit), derived from the actual Rohirric kûd-dûkan (hole dweller).
As a result many old words and names in "Hobbitish" are derivatives of words in Rohirric, so much so that even someone without linguistic training could make out the relation (Merry would later write an entire book devoted to the relationship, Old Place Names in the Shire).

Nothgyth originally had no husband in the Rohirric pantheon and was considered as the mythical mother of all Éothéod, since -according to ancient legends - she bore Eoh, the forefather of the horse-lords, after getting pregnant by swallowing a red berry in the forest.
Unlike his Anglo-Saxon counterpart, he had nothing to do with magic or shamanism (the Éothéod had no use for such things and were extremely suspicious towards anything supernatural), but was the protector of horses and herds, the patron of hunters and the Lord of the Wild Hunt.
The Rohirric concept of the Wild Hunt is slightly different from that of the German or Nose mythology.

Westron   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Rohirric, the language of the Rohirrim was translated by Anglo-Saxon, as Rohirric is an archaic relative of Westron (since the Edain from whose speech Westron is derived were related to the ancestors of the Rohirrim) much as Anglo-Saxon is an archaic relative of English.
Similarly, the tongue of Dale, from which came the names of the Dwarves of Durin's house, was translated by Old Norse, a language related to Anglo-Saxon and modern English as Dalish was related to Rohirric and Westron.
Outside the context of the story, it is clear that most of the "original" forms in Westron or other languages were devised by Tolkien long after the English "translations" were chosen.

Orthanc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
According to Tolkien, its name is both Sindarin for "Mount Fang", and Rohirric for "Cunning Mind".
The latter is more likely to be its real meaning, as the word orthanc is a real Old English word (Old English being the linguistic basis for Rohirric); the Sindarin name being no more than a poetic coincidence.
Orthanc was built during the Third Age by the Númenóreans of Gondor out of a single piece of stone by an unknown process and then hardened.

How thoroughly realized was Tolkien's fiction that he was the ``translator'' of LotR?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The main example was his "substitution" of Anglo-Saxon for Rohirric.
The "rationale" was that the hobbits' dialect of Westron was distantly related to Rohirric; therefore, when hobbits heard Rohirric they recognised many words but the language nevertheless remained just beyond understanding (RK, 65 (V,3)).
There were many other nuances in the intricate and subtle linguistic web he devised (always, he carefully explained, in the interests of "reproducing" the linguistic map of Middle-earth in a way that could be easily assimilated by modern English-speaking readers).

Tolkien uses Éomer and Éowyn to illustrate different aspects of a person’s conflict between hope and despair, and how that conflict can lead one to fight for the flag of humanity and the world.

Of course, when the Rohirric culture appeared he wanted to create an idealised 'anglo-saxon' people for M-e, so they would have to use alliterative verse, as the real anglo-saxons used that verse form.
I suppose what we have is, first, a race of beings based on the norse Alfar, so their 'culture' would reflect what was known of norse/a-s society (in an idealised form).
But I wish they had considered the verses of the Rohirrim in LotR, for the two major Rohirric poems are both said to be "songs".
