  ROINE STOLT -  FLOWER KINGS
I was fortunate to be able to see Roine Stolt and the Flower Kings [whose original CDs are reviewed elsewhere in these pages] live at a local venue, the Phantasmagoria, in Wheaton, Maryland, on September 8th, 1998.
Stolt of course was the star of the show, making his guitar sing ringingly and anthemically.
That album was a solo project for Stolt, and did not use the same lineup of musicians who were formed to be the band, The Flower Kings (although Froberg contributed vocals, and Jaime Salazar was the drummer).

Formed ten years ago in Sweden by veteran musician Roine Stolt, and having released an abundance of material — some studio records are actually double albums — the Flower Kings were the flag wavers for the return of prog-rock in the mid-90s.
Stolt now speaks lot of other motivations that keep the Flower Kings going at their busy pace as well as the basic planning stages to make a record.
Stolt explains that his signing with Inside Out Music was one of necessity, having released his records at first on his own label.

Roine Stolt (born in Uppsala, Sweden on September 5, 1956), the band leader, as well as all the members of the Flower Kings have their music roots in listening to Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Genesis, King Crimson or Procol Harum.
Roine Stolt has been a musician without any musical education therefore it is no wonder that his compositions originate from his own feelings and they are full of heartfelt sensitivity.
The following first live double album "Alive on Planet Earth" appeared, while Roine Stolt, the band leader, was touring as a member of the super four-musician band Transatlantic - with Neal Morse from Spock's Beard (he left the band in 2002), Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater and Pete Trewavas from Marillion.

After finshing the opening number, Roine teasingly announces that the next song is the last one, the humor being that "Garden of Dreams" happens to be a 59 minute song.
Roine Stolt has a quiet unassuming air about him, but he solos with a deep passion, making for highly emotional, stirring solos.

ROINE STOLT Hydrophonia review and MP3
Although you may not hear his name mentioned in the same frame of reference as a Page or Clapton, Roine Stolt is without any doubt one of the best guitarists to ever pick up the instrument.
Because his music is not mainstream, his popularity is not on the level that it should be, but believe me, he belongs in the upper echelon of great musicians of the last decade, and surely beyond as he continues to blaze a path for all of those that yearn to follow his legacy.
Stolt is an exceptional virtuoso that plays hard to formulate adventurous naturally rocking melodies.

Stolt REALLY shines in the middle of Bodin's brilliant 17-minute epic "Three Stories," counterbalancing Bodin's beautiful piano work with some incredibly emotional guitar work that seems to patch directly to your soul (as Stolt's work often does).

— You may know Roine Stolt as the leader and guitar player of The Flower Kings, even though he has a rich and storied past in music since the 70's.
Stolt is another one of those legendary guitar maestros that started off playing the bass, which seems to be more common than not in the development of any artist that plays the six-string.
Stolt is not only the consummate professional and leader of one of the most successful prog-rock bands in the world; he has the talent and vision to create music that is able to stand on its own merit without any reflection on previous collaborations or projects.

 CMT.com : The Flower Kings : Biography
That year, guitarist/singer/composer Roine Stolt, who enjoyed relative European fame in the 1970s as a member of the Swedish progressive rock band Kaipa, brought together ex-Jonas Hellborg drummer Jaime Salazar and ex-Samla Mammas Manna percussionist Hasse Bruniusson to record a solo album, The Flower King.
Stolt's music was graced by a Jon Anderson-like aura and combined complex structures with catchy heartfelt melodies and the prog fans welcomed the album with open arms.
Roine brought in brother Michael Stolt (bass, vocals) and longtime friend Tomas Bodin (keyboards) to perform the material live and thus the Flower Kings were born and The Flower King, the album, is now usually perceived as the band's first.

So Roine and I discussed this, and a few days later we decided to use the name Kaipa again, considering this as a trademark for the content of the album, as well as a good way to nudge it into the Kaipa limelight, and getting more people to hear it.
Roine, who already had two bands to write songs for and play with, agreed to reuse the name Kaipa and thought this a good solution, in spite of his lack of input to the actual compositions as he obviously had hands full with his own successful projects anyway.
Through his way of playing, Roine contributed much to what was the Kaipa sound and came also with valuable input during the final arrangement and mixing stage.

A solo album from the guitar virtuoso Roine Stolt set my expectations high, and when I listened to this album, The music exceeded my expectations and is my favourite Flower Kings album for now!.
But one important fact to remember is that Stolt is the only composer of this work and takes care of all guitar, bass, keyboard and lead vocal work.
Stolt's performance, not only as a guitarist, but also as a bassist and on the keyboards is extremely well done.

 The Flower Kings
Instead, it is actually the first solo effort from songwriter Roine Stolt, who had long been a veteran of the prog scene by this point (going back into the 70's with his days in the obscure Swedish group Kaipa).
Sure, Stolt does do all the songwriting and a vast majority of the playing, but he's pretty much in complete control of the band throughout their history anyway (apart from a Tomas Bodin number here and there), so it makes logical sense that the album should be placed here.
Unfortunately, Stolt's bothersome obsession with his method of filling nearly an entire CD with every song he's written becomes apparent even here, as the album is 70 minutes long.

These are strongly delivered by Roine Stolt, who takes the lead vocal here, and does a very fine job; in fact I’ve rarely heard his voice utilised so well — it fits the material like a glove.
Having so many vocalists in the group (Tillison, Stolt, Baine and Manning all provide lead vocals at some point or another) adds to the variety, although Tillison is arguably the best of the bunch and does sterling work on this very enjoyable track.
