  ROLAND MC-909
The 16 velocity pads at the bottom of the unit can be used to physically trigger complete patterns or individual notes of a particular patch and are supplemented by arpeggio, chord and octave switches.
Roland provides a supplementary start-up guide along with the basic manual, but for those who prefer to jump right in, the best thing to do is to get familiar with the display.
Roland recognizes that this isn't quite perfect, but a work-around exists: If you make the first patch in a pattern the one that you'll be playing live, the glitch disappears — an odd quirk, but nothing that you can't plan around once you're aware of it.

Roland TR-909 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer was a partially analog, partially sample-based drum machine built by Roland Corporation in 1984.
Being the brainchild of Tadao Kikumoto, the engineer behind the Roland TB-303, it features a 16-step music sequencer and a drum kit that, at that time, aimed for realism and cost-effectiveness.
As with the TB-303, the realism of the TR-909 was severely limited by technical constraints, and this showed when the machines were released at relatively low prices before the hype of techno and acid began; more expensive, sample-based drum computers were better at faithfully reproducing real drum sounds, whilst the TR-909 sounded synthetic.

We spoke to Roland about this, and they mentioned a possible OS update to allow cards to be hot-swapped, enabling two to be used for one sample-loading operation, but obviously we don't have that solution yet.
Roland have been generous with sequencer memory: the 909 has enough for about 1.3 million MIDI notes (the MC505 accommodates 95,000 notes, a respectable number in itself).
The 909 is crammed with 215 factory Patterns, plus 440 RPS Patterns and various factory samples, in what seems to be all the dance styles: techno, hardcore, drum and bass, house, RandB, reggae, electronica, hard house, hard trance, euro trance, techno trousers...

I alerted Roland to the problem and was told that it would be fixed in the next operating-system update (which should be available by the time you read this).
The sequence-editing area could use a few enhancements, and I'm not too fond of the feel or response of the Velocity Pads, but considering the value of the instrument as a whole, those are minor quibbles.

Contrary to all the hype the most attractive thing about the eary TRs (606, 808, 909) is not the sounds (although the sounds are good), but the programming interface.
Where the 606 and 808 only have a single overall accent, the 909 has separate accents for each part as well as the overall accent.
The 909 also has shuffle for easier programming of swung patterns (on the 808 and 606 you have to program two bars of 6/8 to get a swung 4/4 pattern).

 Roland TR-909
Roland's TR-808 was being challenged by drum machines that didn't sound so artificial in a mix.
For a basic setup, the sounds can be plugged into a mixer individually, and each sound can panned uniquely, and then treated to a different level of reverb, making some sounds seem closer or further away in a mix.
Unfortunately for musicians, machines that sample the 909 don't offer most of the great features of Roland's classic box, such as individual sound outs, the great feel of the swing, and the abilty to tweak the sounds.

It was long before the '909' became the cult machine it is today, and long before the sound of its now famous bass drum was heard booming over a crowded dance-floor.
Today, a lot of hardcore records use things like a guitar distortion pedal to thicken up and crank up that famous 909 bass drum and so on.
Fortunately, there are lots of outputs on the back of the box: a pair of stereo outputs and separate outputs for most drum sounds.

International DJ magazine - Roland MC-909 Sampling Groovebox
Although many have dipped their toes in the waters of groovebox technology, it was Roland who first showed the way back in 1996, with their landmark MC-303: the first box of its type that offered classic dance sounds of yesteryear without breaking the bank.
The 909 offers two Multi-FX processors that not only cover the staple effects, such as chorus and delay, but also more creative algorithms that can push the boundaries of sonic manipulation.
Bizarrely, Roland have also included a load of preset patterns that cover the most popular contemporary dance genres, such as house, garage, D&B and so on.

In Roland's terminology, this system is called LA synthesis (Linear Arithmetic), but what it really means is completely beyond my understanding.
This synth has become a true classic instrument, and its sound can be heard on a vast number of recordings, from Enya (the main pizzicato theme in "Orinoco Flow") to Jean-Michel Jarre (that looping sound in the beginning of "Revolutions").
I don't know if this is true, but I have read somewhere that they are a result of an accident created when a Roland programmer messed up in the ROM programming and ended up with a sound he liked...

The Roland 303, the bass synth, was first brought to market in the early '80s.
And so Roland pulled the machine off the market in two years, and it was more or less forgotten -- except by musicians too cash-strapped to load up on the newer (and presumably better) gear.
Other musicians soon discovered that the sub-bass sounds of the kick drums in the Roland 808 and 909 drum machines could produce sonic booms powerful enough to literally shake the room.

True is, however, that you find the distinctive sounds from this machine on a great deal of recordings today.
Originally released in the mid 80's this machine never got any initial success as the public demand craved for purely digital drums and it was discontinued after a brief period of time by Roland.
The machine can be destined to drive an external sound device as 16 of the instruments are "external" - they are designated fixed MIDI note numbers over an octave and can be programmed as with the normal sounds. This enables the 909 to be used as a very simple pattern-based on-the-fly sequencer.
