Drum machine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most modern drum machines are sequencers with a sample playback (rompler) or synthesizer component that specializes in the reproduction of drum timbres as well as the sound of other traditional percussion instruments.
Drum machines can either be programmed in real time (the user hears a metronome and plays beats in time with the metronome) or in step time, where the user specifies the precise moment in time on which a note will sound.
By the year 2000, standalone drum machines became much less common, being partly supplanted by general-purpose hardware samplers controlled by sequencers (built-in or external), software-based sequencing and sampling and the use of loops, and music workstations with integrated sequencing and drum sounds.

It was long before the '909' became the cult machine it is today, and long before the sound of its now famous bass drum was heard booming over a crowded dance-floor.
The bass drum is no much more than a soft thud, the hi-hat is a nasty crackle and the snare drum sounds like a short sample of radio static.
I don't know if it had to do with my sequencer, the MIDI cables or the drum machine itself, but I remember myself tearing my hair in frustration while listening to the boom-chack of the TR-909 slowly and painfully starting to drift out of sync, often in the middle of a recording session.

Knuckles' reel-to-reel edits and relatively minimalist, driving Roland 909 drum machine beats are credited with creating the original "Warehouse" or house music sound.
Many local Chicago musicians began making what were not much more than drum tracks with house-like beats for DJs to mix with their old disco, Italian disco imports, rock, euro-pop and whatever they could get to move asses on the floor and create a constant and danceable groove.

And so Roland pulled the machine off the market in two years, and it was more or less forgotten -- except by musicians too cash-strapped to load up on the newer (and presumably better) gear.
Other musicians soon discovered that the sub-bass sounds of the kick drums in the Roland 808 and 909 drum machines could produce sonic booms powerful enough to literally shake the room.
