Roland D-50 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The engineers at Roland determined the most difficult component of a realistic instrument to simulate is the attack, so the D-50 included almost 100 sampled attacks in ROM.
The external Roland PG-1000 Programmer could also be attached to the D-50 for better and more complex control over sound manipulations.
The polyphonic, 61-key, Roland D50 was released in 1987 to compete with the Yamaha DX7 market.

 Roland D-50 Synthesizer
In Roland's terminology, this system is called LA synthesis (Linear Arithmetic), but what it really means is completely beyond my understanding.
I don't know if this is true, but I have read somewhere that they are a result of an accident created when a Roland programmer messed up in the ROM programming and ended up with a sound he liked...
This synth has become a true classic instrument, and its sound can be heard on a vast number of recordings, from Enya (the main pizzicato theme in "Orinoco Flow") to Jean-Michel Jarre (that looping sound in the beginning of "Revolutions").

Recently, Roland's own V-Synth reminded of the D-50 thanks to (in a few cases) the low-grade samples, the sonic character, and the amazing editing possibilities it offers.
The character of the D-50 sounds is one of richness, analog mixed with crystalline digital perfection, warmth, and an overall aural beauty that's hard to follow.
The D-50 was also the first synth to incorporate an on-board reverb/multi-fx unit, a fact that contributed to the legendary sound this synth possesses.
