The director is Roland Joff, who made an impressive feature debut with The Killing Fields, but whose subsequent works mostly have been misfires.
In the production material, Joff shamelessly says that "to be true to everything we had learned and everything he and Hester stand for today, we felt we couldn't let Arthur Dimmesdale be hanged.
Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is all social context, and the author--descendant of a judge in the Salem witch trials--knew the terrain.

The Mission   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Sweeping and visually resplendent, The Mission is a powerful action epic about a man of the sword (Robert DeNiro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons) who unite to shield a South American tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th century colonial empires.
Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) directs this fuzzy effort at a David Lean-like epic without David Lean's sense of emotional proportion.
Robert De Niro is briefly effective as a callous soldier who kills his own brother and then turns to Irons's character to oversee his penance and conversion to the clergy.

The Nevada-based project is headed by General Leslie R. Groves (a testy Paul Newman) and scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Dwight Schultz of the TV series 'The A-Team'), who later regretted his cooperation in the project.
The problem with the film lies not with the acting, which includes solid performances by Bonnie Bedelia, Laura Dern, John Cusack, and future U.S. Senator Fred Dalton Thompson, but with the script by director Roland Joffé and Bruce Robinson ('Withnail and I' and Joffé's 'The Killing Fields').
A subject as morally complex as the creation of a supreme weapon requires a strong and thoughtful script, but 'Fat Man and Little Boy' never gets further than establishing that indeed, atomic power is something to reckon with.

Roland Joffandeacute; (The Killing Fields) directs this fuzzy effort at a David Lean-like epic without David Lean's sense of emotional proportion.
Lean's most important screenwriting collaborator, Robert Bolt, in fact wrote The Mission, which concerns a Jesuit missionary (Jeremy Irons) who establishes a church in the hostile jungles of Brazil and then finds his work threatened by greed and political forces among his superiors.
As it happens, Bolt wrote the screenplay, and appears to have worked closely with the director, Rolland Joffe (and#x27;The Killing Fieldsand#x27;).

Film version of Scarlet Letter gets an `F' for inaccuracies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
However, it's unnecessary to bicker over the similarities or discrepancies of director Roland Joff's adaptation, because the film is obliging enough to fail in its own right.
As distracting as this was, it was nothing in comparison to the runaway sentiment of the story, which proved to be the film's greatest folly.
When the bogusly upbeat ending finally surfaces, you might wish for a dash of poetic justice to impale Joff's film with a Scarlet `P' for pretension.

 Morricone Conducts Morricone DVD Review
The second section, "Single Pages," showcases excerpts of early Morricone scores from lesser-known films like Love CircleMaddalena, and H2S (the latter an obscure 1968 film that fell victim to censorship).
The fourth section, "Socially Committed Cinema," highlights Morricone's work on serious issue-related dramas including Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and Casualties of War, while the fifth and final section, "Tragic, Lyrical, Epic," concludes with the unforgettable "Gabriel's Oboe" theme from Morricone's beloved score for Roland Joff#233;'s 1986 drama The Mission.
And while some may lament the absence of such Morricone favorites as "Man With a Harmonica" from Once Upon a Time in the West, these 21 selections offer ample compensation, demonstrating Morricone's prolific versatility while emphasizing the string and woodwind arrangements that have made Morricone a household name in Italy and around the world.

Dim efforts by Roland Joffé, the Coen Brothers, Lars von Trier, Neil LaBute, and John Waters darken the screens of the world's flashiest film fest
Mounted by transnational hack Roland Joffé (City of Joy, The Scarlet Letter), the bloated Vatel features France's grand homme Gérard Depardieu in the titular role of a late-17th-century party-thrower.
In any case, Joffé might well have been speaking of Cannes itself when describing Vatel to The Hollywood Reporter: "You could say the film is about ambition, success, pain, deception, politics, love, eating--and all the other things when a large group of people gather to enjoy themselves."
