Symonette had decided that he would indeed seek the leadership at the next convention that the decision was made to postpone it by those who believe that this would be guaranteeing the PLP another five-year term in office.
Symonette is not considered to be a prime candidate for leadership of his party is the fact that he is white.

Mr Symonette said Mr Ingraham had done a lot for the country and mashed a few corns, "but that was in the best interest of The Bahamas as a whole." He said that it was up to Mr Ingraham to decide if he wanted to come back and run the FNM.
One listener called in to the show and asked Mr Symonette whether he would be running for the position of deputy leader, with Mr Ingraham running for the position of leader again.

Her husband became the first premier elected in the Bahamas in 1964, when Great Britain granted the Caribbean territory autonomy and relegated its appointed governor to a more symbolic role in government.
Lady Symonette, who was born in Schriever, Ontario, met her husband while on a vacation in the Bahamas in 1945.
