Roland TB-303 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The TB-303 is a synthesizer/sequencer produced by the Roland corporation in 1982 and 1983 that had a crucial role in the development of contemporary electronic music.
As good as the Roland Corporation tried, their new "303 clone" was an entirely new product that had almost nothing to do with the original TB-303 besides a few bass samples and the interface design.
Roland's designer of the TB-303, Tadao Kikumoto, was also responsible for the well-known TR-909 ("Transistor Rhythm").

Wired 10.05: Six Machines That Changed The Music World
The year before, Roland moved to capitalize on the machine's popularity with techno producers by introducing the MC-303 Groovebox, a synthesizer that could simulate the mutant TB-303 Bass Line as well as beats from the TB-909 and TR-808 drum machines.
But the TB-303 was reborn as a much stranger beast that year: Earl "Spanky" Smith picked up a 303 in a Chicago secondhand music store and took it back to his place, where his musical partner, Nathaniel Jones, tinkered with the box.
They dubbed themselves Phuture, then released their 303 experiment as "Acid Trax." That record, as well as other tunes like Sleezy D's "I've Lost Control" and Adonis' "The Poke," were club hits in Chicago; once imported to England, they became salvos in a massive youth cultural movement that begot electronic subgenre after subgenre.

 Techno Guide: TB 303
Roland's TB-303 is the bass line machine that has most influenced the early Acid House scene in the late 80's since the realease of the compilation "Acid Tracks" on Phuture label written by Herbert J, DJ Pierre and Spanky and produced by MARSHALL JEFFERSON.
The most characteristic features of this bass machine are the sequencer and the filter, and it's filtered bass sequences are one of the footprints of Acid House.
In fact the recording was created by accident during a test sesion using the now legendary machine.

 TADAO KIKUMOTO
How odd, then, that nearly 20 years after the Roland TB-303 first hit the market, its creator, who also crafted the TR-909, is far from a household name.
Tadao Kikumoto, the senior managing director at Roland headquarters in Japan, created the equipment upon which modern electronica is built, yet he utters nary a word about it.
One trio of friends collectively identified as Phuture (Spanky, Herbert J and DJ Pierre) stumbled upon the 303 circa 1985 and effectively changed the course of dance music by pioneering a searing, intense new sound: acid.

 Halfbakery: 303 acid ring tones
For those not in the know, the 303 refers to the Roland TB-303, a primitive synthesizer/sequencer, originally designed as a poor-person's replacement for a bass player, but which has since then become massively popular in techno/house/trance music because of the resonant squelching noises it can make when you tweak the knobs.
The 303 itself is a simple device; there is software (such as ReBirth) which emulates it accurately, and making a 303-like sound generator on a chip should be relatively easy.
Which brings me to my idea: design a 303 on a chip, make it cheap, embed it in mobile phones (ideally those with a fluorescent/transparent/glittery appearance), and you have something more novel and cooler (at least for E-popping raver kids) than the usual beepy renditions of classical motifs/folk melodies.
