Probably the most variable sound on the 808 is the snare drum where you have control over the tuning and also the balance of noise against the pitched 'tone' of the sound (using the curiously labelled 'SNAPPY' control).
The 808 enjoyed marginal success on the occasional record (Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing' for example) but it wasn't a runaway success for Roland when it was released.
But as well as fashionable, the 808 also became expensive and something that once languished in the window of a second-hand shop for $50 was now fetching upwards of $1,000 or more.

There is a nice program by Propeller Head called Rebirth that incorporates a 909 an 808 and two 303s (the 303 is an old Roland analogue bass synth even more infamous for defining the sound of electronic music).
These are the Roland Tr-909 and the Roland Tr-808.
This interface was a large part of the Tr line's popularity and has been copied by many drum machines since.

Roland Jupiter-6 - I never really liked this synth that much except for one sound I was able to get out of it that sounded very close to a Polymoog, which isn't saying much since the Polymoog was a very weedy sounding synth.
The sound was huge, the interface was great, and the oscillators were extremely stable, but some of the components (the little chrome switches) were prone to failure, and it was difficult to work on due to the design of the modules.
Roland basically copied the look of the ARP 2600 and Moog Modular, and made the interface more user-friendly.

While disco grooves and 808 drumlines were used in the creation of early chicago house, the 303 really was used also very extensively at that time.
House basically evolved from disco records mashed together over 808 drum lines, synthetic bass was not necessary because there were all sorts of grooves on the records.

 ReBirth: Evolution and what Otherox thinks
It is useful because sometimes you needed to have the two bass lines distorted and sometimes you needed to distort one or both bass lines but with the 808 distorted too to make the sound louder.
I mean, it’s not a bad drumbox, simply the right thing to do was including the 909 and not the 808.
I think the Props made a mistake with that, because if the program was for dance music, how did they think the 808 would be useful for this?
