MMORPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These were games that ran on private servers (usually at a university, sometimes without the knowledge of the system's administrators); players would connect to the games using a TELNET client.
These games provide a single game universe, where it is possible that all players of a title from around the world combine to participate in the "life" of the MMORPG community.
Player-created content in these games would be in the form of areas to explore, missions to carry out and specific weapons and armor to use (see one planned expansion here: [2]).

Roleplaying game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roleplaying games add a level of sophistication to this basic idea; unlike a child who just wants to feel like a cowboy for a few minutes, a group of adults in a Wild West roleplaying game will generate specific characters and an ongoing plot.
Roleplaying games emerged in the 1970s as a as a variation on fantasy wargames inspired by sword and sorcery fiction, in which each player controlled only a single unit, or "character".
Games such as GURPS and Champions also served to introduce game balance between player characters to roleplaying games; later, Vampire: The Masquerade introduced a rules-light approach, encouraging immersive storytelling.

IMAGinES RPGs: What is a Roleplaying Game?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
During each roleplaying session, often referred to as an adventure or scenario, the game master sets the team of player characters an obstacle of some sort to overcome, be it a quest for a fabled magic item, a villain of the piece to be beaten, or a contract to be fulfilled.
Although a single game session usually does have an objective to accomplish, and players receive rewards in terms of increased experience (and sometimes new equipment) for their characters, there is no real way to "win" in roleplaying.
During an actual roleplaying game session, I don't have a book to read; I have several friends who are also creating the game world inside their heads, who are seeing pictures and vistas of their own, who have their own alter-egos interacting with their view of the world.

Each PC still in the game (except the challenger and target) may, if he or she wishes, note clear support or opposition to the challenge.
Optionally, the note may also describe a desired fate for the challenger, the target, the note's writer, or any other PC in the game, so long as these fates are plausible consequences of the challenge's success or failure.

MotoCaust Roleplaying Game :: d20 Magazine Rack :: Are You Game Enough?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
MotoCaust is a complete, non-d20 roleplaying game written by Philip J. Reed, illustrated by Christopher Shy and published by Ronin Arts.
Players can choose from six different archetypes in the game, which are all variants of fighters, drivers, or techs: Bodyguards and Gun Bunnies are weapons experts, Cycle Couriers and Runners take the wheel of souped-up cars, and Grease Monkeys and Tuners do their best to keep those vehicles in shape.
Dividing character creation and game rule information between the first two chapters is a weakness in the structure of the rules, because it forces the player to flip back and forth through the book.

Serenity Roleplaying Game? - Page 2 - RPGnet Forums
In my misspent youth working with a sad-sack gaming company (which had an innovative set of LARP rules and a good setting, but labored under the impression that they could ever publish said rules or make money off them), we were at one convention where the big LARP was being run by a competitor.
Anyway, the head of this gaming "company" claimed he was Margeret Weis' son -- although he didn't have the same last name, because he "didn't want to trade on her reputation." Even though I personally heard about his putative mother several times in the first hour of meeting him.
The point is, he considered himself a real hardcore game designer and at one point said he'd invented over two hundred completely original gaming systems by the age of 20, and had been "almost published" more than fifty times by then.

So he starts describin' the game, and I gotta tell ya, it made talkin' to a giant cockroach seem pretty tame — a whacked-out sci-fi setting with living machines, giant robots, giant bugs, wormtrains, bizzaro mutations, and zombies with caterpillars in their noggins.
The game keeps most of its focus on New York City, bought out by the Japanese after they used a tech-stopping bomb to save the seceding metropolis from an attack by arch-nemesis New Jersey involving hyper-realistic holograms and giant tentacle robots.
The art in the game comes almost entirely from the comic and the web series, with some original art provided by Voltaire as well.
