Using a Microscope: Clamp Connections (MushroomExpert.Com)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Rolf Singer's 1956 key to Pluteus worldwide uses the presence or absence of "clamp connections" to break up the genus and sort out dozens of species.
Singer (as many readers already know) was a mycological giant of the 20th Century, and his description of Pluteus fuliginosus, based on careful study of the original "type collection" made by Murrill 40 years earlier, says: "all hyphae without clamp connexions" (164).
Consequently we hesitate to recognize as authentic the identification by Singer of specimens which he placed here but which were collected on other substrata, and presumably lacked clamps (122).

The word "probably" prior to a herbarium name indicates that the herbarium is the possible place of deposit based on Singer's unpublished field notes and Singer's habit to deposit type specimens in the institution where he was working, even though it was not clearly stated in his publication.

The collection attained worldwide prominence largely through the efforts of the late Rolf Singer, resident Research Associate for twenty-five years and author of The Agaricales in Modern Taxonomy, now in its fourth edition.
Singer was the most active student of Tropical American Agaricales.
Singer's collections and notes are indispensable for systematic, ecological and biodiversity studies of higher fungi and are a major strength of the Museum's holdings.

After months of searching references and cross-references I finally obtained Rolf Singer's 1964 description, the authoritative source for the species.
Singer's key to Gerronema was easy enough to figure out, since it involves spore measurements and the like, clearly recognizeable in any language--though my reading of the key is based on the assumption that what a German-English dictionary renders as "buckles" refers to clamp connections.

Rolf SInger originally "defined Panaeolus subbalteatus as not bluing in the stipe [stem] because of the brown coloration [of the stem]." However Dr. Singer did notice the occurrence of some mild bluing in the sclerotia.
Rolf Singer and Alexander H. Smith were the first to note that the "blue color of the sclerotia and the base of one single specimen [of Panaeolus subbalteatus] were the same as they found in Copelandia cyanescens and the bluing of the Psilocybes."
In 1976, Jonathan Ott reported that "psilocin and psilocybin have been detected in Canadian specimens of Panaeolus subbalteatus." Mexican specimens were also shown to contain psilocybin as were Italian collections.

Cystoderma is made up of a group of relatively small species (1.5 - 8 cm broad) which are characterized by their white spore deposit, attached gills, centrally attached stem which is confluent with the cap, and by the granulose covering of the cap and lower portion of the stem.
