Rolf got on well with Hill and secured a seat for 1975, but his first race in the new Hill GH1 at the trouble-torn Spanish GP ended in disaster when a wing stay failed while he was leading the race.
With Warsteiner backing the Arrows team in 1978, Rolf was given the second seat and a chance to renew his Grand Prix career, but the season was a severe disappointment and Stommelen returned to sports car and GT racing, where he was still a competitive runner.
Rolf Stommelen's last race was at Riverside, California on the 24th of April 1983.

Rolf-Johann Stommelen came up through the ranks of racing in Germany in the early 1960s and ended up as a Porsche factory sports car driver in the late 1960s, winning the Targa Florio in 1967 with Paul Hawkins in a Porsche 910.
Stommelen joined the Brabham works team at the side of Sir Jack Brabham and enjoyed an impressive maiden Grand Prix season, thanks to backing from the caravan company Eifelland Wohnwagenbau, which was run by enthusiast Gunther Henerici.

Stommelen, buoyed by a superb Austrian GP performance which saw him haul his Brabham from 18th to third, then left to pursue a second season with Surtees.
In sportscars, Rolf had his Alfa drive to keep him busy, and it was because of this and his close ties with Brabham that he was chosen to step into Andrea De Adamich's shoes in the third Brabham, the Alfa protege having hurt himself in the notorious 1973 Silverstone pile-up.
For 1976, Rolf was glad to sign for Martini Porsche, hoping to return to the winning ways he got used to in the late sixties winning the 1967 Targa Florio, the 1968 Daytona 24 hours and the 1968 Paris 1000kms for Weissach.

A third place in Austria and a fifth in Italy marked out Rolf as a man with great promise, but a switch to Team Surtees in 1971 slowed his career's momentum and a detour to drive the Luigi Colani- revamped March 721 for Heinz Henerixxi's Eifelland team in 1973 virtually brought it to a halt.
He recovered to drive for Hill again later that season, but was unable to reproduce his past form and faded from the Grand Prix scene at the end of the year.
But the light had gone out and Rolf was an also-ran, so he switched to sports cars thereafter.
