It was later superceeded in this role by 135 film, and became a format for professional use.
This results in a longer film on the same spool, but as a result, there are no printed frame numbers, and moreover, it cannot be used in unmodified old cameras that have the red window as frame indicator.
Also, since the film alone is thinner than a film with a backing paper, depending on camera type a special pressure plate may be required to achieve optimal focus.

Because they involve no extra processes like cutting film and loading it to jackets, reels of roll film are the least expensive microform to produce.
However, files can be separated on the roll by blank frames which are visible as flashes of light when you scroll through the film, and frames can be numbered sequentially for use as an index or reference as part of a Computer Aided Retrieval (CAR) system.
Roll film can be viewed on an inexpensive retrieval device that you "thread" like a film projector, or the film can be loaded to a plastic cartridge for automatic threading.
