 John Lennon
I've got the live album from this set (one studio, one live), and it's an unlistenable mess, with Yoko screaming her head off through most of the sloppy, pointless big-band jamming, which alternately features an all-star British pickup band, or Frank Zappa's post-Mothers group (the tapes came from two different concerts).
Rock 'N' Roll was the source of several out-takes that surfaced on Menlove Avenue, and Lennon's last album before Double Fantasy, as he took a five-year break to serve as househusband and father to Sean Ono Lennon.
But pop music isn't her forte, and I think most people would've rather had a whole Lennon album, especially after a five-year break, than have to listen to a bunch of Ono songs.

Rock 'n' Roll (John Lennon album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As soon as Lennon split with Yoko Ono and arrived in Los Angeles in the fall of 1973 with May Pang, he teamed up with Phil Spector to record a cover album of Lennon's favorite rock'n'roll hits.
With Lennon producing, he cut the bulk of what became the Rock'n'Roll album in October 1974, and handed the tapes to Levy.

When an album comes out on a major label, it's automatically conservative, because the forces of production behind it are aligned with big business, AKA the state.

While Cobain could never have been anyone's victim but his own, his imagination, self-esteem and sense of authenticity were shaped by Maximum Rock and Roll's moral universe.

It seems like rock and roll is so jaded here there are a lot of expectations put on bands: you have to be cool, you have to be this or that, you have to be a certain way.
The Japanese scene is weird, because their culture is very proper, but when they start rocking, they'll jump around, they'll pick you up and bang your head on the ceiling while you're trying to play guitar.
I think the Japanese had a better clue of what other people were thinking about rock and roll even in the 60s and they just carried on, but Taiwan is more isolated.

Lennon threw himself lovingly into this project that hearkened back to the simpler times of being a teenager smitten with the sounds of Chuck Berry and Little Richard (both of whom are represented on this record), light years away from any kind of political statements.
Lennon eventually released ROCK 'N' ROLL, a batch of covers ranging the gamut of early rock classics from the '50s and '60s.

Much criticism has been hurled at the album's ubiquitous brass, but on the new recording, bouncy horns and newly vivid bass enliven even previously unspectacular songs like "Ya Ya", although the cod-reggae "Do You Wanna Dance" will forever be a concept by which Lennon fans measure their pain.
While Rock 'n' Roll is a wistful look at rock's lost innocence, Acoustic hunkers down in the humdrum here-and-now of 1970s existence.
Here, Lennon revisits his roots, complete with the heavy, 50s-style echo he was employing on much of his original work ("Instant Karma", for example).

John Lennon: Rock 'n' Roll - PopMatters Music Review
As Rock 'n' Roll is not one of Lennon's finest moments, its greatest appeal lies with his most ardent supporters, those who enjoy hearing their hero creating for the sake of creating.
Consistent with the pedestrian stature of the album is the reissue inclusion of a paltry four bonus tracks, all of which add nothing of discernible value.
In actuality, the tracks tarnish Lennon's efforts as they are, for the most part, ponderous, with "To Know Her Is to Love Her" entering the sonic region of excruciating.

Whatever John Lennon's reasons for recording a whole album of 1950s rock & roll standards at this advanced stage of his career, he at least made a good job of it.
The album also has a fresh feel to it as well, which helps to create an atmosphere that if you were to close your eyes, you'd think Lennon was playing live in the same room as you.
